OK - mine's a 1999 Freesport, does that make it a Mk1 or Mk2? I roadtested a '98, and it was completely different to mine, but I keep seeing Mk2s as beginning in 2000. Welcome to confused.com!

Mk1 (1st Generation or RAV4.1) 1994(May/June)-2000

Mk2 (2nd Generation or RAV4.2) 2000(Aug)-2006

Mk3 (3rd Generation or RAV4.3) 2006(Feb)-20??

Also both 1st and 2nd generation had mid-life facelifts, For 1st Generation that was for models after 1998(Dec/Jan) and for 2nd Generation that was for model after 2003 (Oct).

Our friends on RAV4world.com (US Forum for RAV4 Owners) prefer to call the generation of RAV4's as RAV4.1 (1st Gen) or RAV4.2 (2nd Gen) for RAV4.3 (3rd Gen) to determine the RAV4 Generation also for mid-life model facelifts they refer to them as RAV4.1.5 and RAV4.2.5 but it seems that UK folks prefer the MK1,MK2, MK3 for the RAV4 Generations.

The 1st Generation RAV4's had the most Limited Edition models, In order there was the RAV4 MAX (July/1996), RAV4 Edge (Dec/1996), RAV4 Stax (June/1997), RAV4 Freesport (June/1998 3Door, Jan/1999 5 Door), RAV4 Heat (July/1999) and RAV4 Giant (July/1999), RAV4 Reebok (Feb/2000).

2nd Generation RAV4 has very few Limited Edition models, RAV4 Granite (May/2005) and to some extend the RAV4 XTR (June/2005) was a Special Edition model.

Thanks for the link Bob - but it's complicated things a bit! My model is SXA 11R AWPGK(W) no sign of it on the link - SXA11W but no R. I also put my VIN into Carfax and it came up unrecognised - now this could be a ploy to get me to give them some money, or I've got the Rav that jack built....................it doesn't feel iffy though - you can usually tell. :help:

  • 3 weeks later...

If it's the same as mine on my Avatar at the front then it's a Mark 1 facelifted model. The only freesport versions i've seen are on this model anyway, 98 - 99 ish.

Hi i notice you refer to RAV4world. Good site for info but does it relate to uk models? i have noticed some differences between uk and us specs, maybe this is just my lack of familiarity or a language difference (being a newby & all!)

PM the reg number and chassis number to me, I will tell you the production date etc

EDIT, there is a vast difference in UK and USA specs, usually engine and trim levels are completly different

Hi Merry widow, Rav4 world is very very much US biased. Very few European Rav fans go on, Anchorman, Bothy,Chatman and possibly one or two others go on including myself, but nowadays it is a better site at TOC Rav section most definetly

I enjoy using the forum for its worldwide info on the RAV. The RAV was only introduced to USA in 1996, but was pretty much the same as the UK version. In U.S. they have several different variations, and you find mention of a V6 engine in the RAV which we never got in the UK.

I found it extremely useful when we were fitting the 3SGTE turbo engine into my 1st RAV - as it had only been done by about 5 others in USA; Russia; New Zealand; and Aussieland.

The outcome was so enjoyable that i bought a 2nd RAV to do the same conversion! This will allow me to have a 4 seat, 3 door RAV4 turbo petrol shoving out just short of 300bhp; whilst we start to play with the 2 seat, 3 door 1st version by stretching the bhp on it past the 400bhp mark and beyond. Well, boys will be boys!

I did join a landrover forum but got flung off after I mentioned I had a RAV4 !!
