Advice Required....

Rite,

I am having my gen 5 celica GTI lowered next week. I am ordering the springs, but i am unsure of what drop will be ok. Most springs seem to be 40 mm, i have 17 alloys, which are correct PCD etc for toyota celica. Will 40 mm be ok, or would 30 mm be better. ( i am having probs finding 30mm springs ).

Has anyone lowered there gen 5 by 40mm with 17's on , what was it like ( any rubbing of arches etc....)

Also , since changing my clutch, i seem to have developed a judder in the steering, when going left, its not violent but i think the steering feels strange since the clutch was changed , and with this judder it makes me think,

:(

again any advice ?...

thanks in advance

Rob

I lowered mine 35mm i think it was. No problem with 17`s fitted.(I changed to 16`s shortly after) Although you should have the same rolling radius with 17`s as with 15`s. Obviously the tyre profile has to be reduced to compensate otherwise you`ll end up with both tyre fouling and speedo problems. If you`ve got the same rolling radius then the only problem you might have is if you`ve increased the width of the tyre. As a guide i`ve got 225/40/16 tyres fitted and no problems whatsoever.

Its gearing problems he needs to worry about, forget the speedo!!

Dak - There wide boys for 16" Diameter!!!

Not really. Standard size was 215/50/15 on 6.5j rims And your supposed to go wider & lower as the rim size increases. Ideally they should be 220/45 but i couldn`t find any so went 225/40/16 on 7j`s to keep the ratio`s right (In fact it`s geared down by 1.65% Better acceleration then. )

*Edit. And boy does it grip.

AFAIK you should be fine with 215's and a 40mm drop :)

I run 30mm springs and 215/40/17's, and theres acres of room!

If you fancy 30mm instead, Eibachs (which I have fitted) and APEX will do the job

Well , was looking into my juddering in the steering wheel. My left hand front shock absorber has burst its seal, never mind. so i guess thats why its acting strange...

So gonna buy some new shocks and 40mm springs, was looking at the kyb gas shocks from fensport ... what do you revkon?.. my car is a j reg gti.

any suggestions?

I dont have experience of KYB Gas Shocks on an ST182 myself, although I have fitted them to a sera with great results

IIRC quite a few peeps I have read about have them on their Gen6 too, and all report they are a great item.

I have personally gone for Koni Sport single adjustables, but like many ongoing projects they are not on the car yet.

If your alloys are the correct offset you shouldn't have any issues. I had KYB front shocks, lowering springs -40mm and 17" alloys on my Corolla with no issues.

What make of coils have you all had experience with? I'm pricing up some now. Spax seem to be the cheapest, giving 40mm drop. Had at look at Eibach, they are 170 a pop (pro kit) for 30mm drop.

Any other makes you'd reccomend? the last thing i want is the car's wheels rubbing or bottoming out at any time.

Spax on mine. I`m pretty sure they are a 30 or 35mm drop though. They do the job ok.

I have the eibachs, although on a gen 5.

they seemed quite well matched to the standard dampers too, so not too much boinging around cos the dampers cant cope.

I'd highly reccomend them from my experience, despite the price, but I havent had any other make on a celica to compare them to.

Yep.

Another one to consider, especially if you want damers too, is the AVO sport full suspension kit.

This includes the springs and matched dampers, IIRC they give a 40mm drop. Price is around £400.

I dont know of anyone whos fitted the full kit, but someone I know fitted the springs to his 182 and reprted good results.
