Yaris Issues

Noticed when recently driving the wife's 1.3 CC, there is substantial road & wind noise.

Road noise from rear is intrusive to the extent that you think a window is open or there are grommets missing. Is this normal? I'm used to a very quiet Avensis.

Wind noise is also very noticable around door mirrors when driving at 15mph+. There is a high pitched whistle which can be very annoying, especially when you have the window open. Anyone noticed this?

I find the factory fit Good Year tyres are also very noisy, which may be half the problem on the road noise issue.

Comments/Advise appreciated.........

The Yaris is generally a bit road noisy, even compared to a 2.5 turbo Focus, the cabin in that is relatively quiet... but sitting in a work colleagues 1.6 Volvo S40, you could really tell the difference!! Probably down to the size comparisons - the bigger the car, the more noise cushioning??

Whistling wing mirrors are also an issue, but you can solve that easily (people have mentioned that before - try a search on whistling mirrors)

I've never had a problem with the Goodyear tyres but am of the understand that they arent the greatest tyres in the world... ;)

Yup - the Yaris is a little noisey car. :D

I haven't suffered the whistling mirrors yet, but the road noise is exactly as you describe it - like there's a window open, but in the back!

Turn the stereo up. ;)

It's noisy but I've been in noisier small cars. The whistling mirrors is an easy fix. Changing from the Goodyear tyres should also make a difference. Not noticed much noise from the back, I have to say though remember, with the rear seat fully forward, there is a gap right into the boot.

these are normal as it is the cheap end of the toyota range it would be unfair to compare it to your avensis

the high pitched whistle is normal too and this is noticable when I drive with the sunroof open too just poor design i think, as I can drive at 70mph with the sunroof fully open in my merc with hardly any noise

tyre noise due to thin carpet + hardly any soundproofing

but I can't really complain as the yaris is a nippy little town car that gets u to A to B with little fuss and u could do a lot worse than a yaris.

The best road noise tyres Ive had (ever) are toyos - you've no idea the difference until you try.

personally never had the whistling from the mirrors ...

I think you are right on the road noise. Combination of poor NVH & noisy Good Year tyres ( Made in Slovakia) are the main causes.

I will ask Mr T to sort mirror, if fix mentioned doesn't cure.

Also have developed a Noisy water pump pulley when cold. Already had belt changed to try & cure but I believe it's the Water pump pulley. Another job they can do.

Anyone got a way of resolving scratching around ignition switch? Coulmn shrouds scratch very easily if you mislocate the key.

I'd phone Mr T before you go in and get them to sort out the mirror for you. They can then look up the TSB on it if they haven't done one before. May as well get them to do it as you're going in anyway.

My column was scratched from brand new. They replaced the shroud.

As far, as other road noise. I've had a trip up and down the M53 today and, thinking about this thread, turned off the cd player and had a good listen. :D

To be honest, my car is very quiet at the back. I must admit though that the T2s I've had as courtesy cars have been noisier. I can't speak for any other versions.

Weird though if it's excessively noisy as your wife's Yaris is the same model as mine, isn't it?

Booked it in today for the pulley & mirror noises. They have told me that there is a fix for the mirror with some felt pads.

Already been in once for the pulley rattle. They changed the belt as they said it was a commom problem. Second time lucky........

I have seen sticky tapes stuck around the key hole in taxis. I use Gaffer tape (many colours) and self-amalgamating tapes (silver or black) for my car. A black Gaffer tape (my Yaris is black) is now covering the ever vulnerable upwardly protruding lip in the boot just under the tailgate.

Hope this helps. :)

I find the same, especially when it's raining as I can hear all the water on the road outside - makes me think there's a leak somewhere  I just keep the radio on now and it takes away the problem.

Also with the whistling, on our Yaris Blue we fixed the problem by inserted a piece of draft excluder in the gap between the wing mirror and the black bit which holds the mirror, cheap and effective and takes less than 10 minutes to sort.

Hi all, new to the forum here.

Just a brief note about the noisy cabin. I've recently used some roofing felt bought from B&Q for about £20(self adhesive) on my Corrado door to cure some door rattle and reduce the road noise somewhat. Its not bad, a bit messy but does the job. Might be worth putting this all over the Yaris - door skins, boot area, under the carpet. I've also got a roll of felt (fabric, not roofing) that i'll be using in the summer under the carpets. Has anyone already tried these or similar measures? If not I'll report back once complete - which will be in the summer some time.
