Squeaky / Rattle Under Bonnet, But Only When Cold!

Hello

I'm new to the forum so go easy ...

I have been in and out (4/5 times) of Inchcape with a squeaky / rattle under bonnet of my wifes 1.3 CC Yaris, the problem only happens for a couple of minutes when cold! Dealer has oiled / greased everything that spins but it hasn't helped - Latest from the dealer is that its under investigation at Toyota and could be for serveral months before its resolved!

Has anybody had anything similar? I'm guessing its a belt or a bearing but I'm clearly no expert.

Any help, much appreciated.

Hello

Our Yaris 1.3cc seems to have the same problem.

We bought our Yaris new in May 2004. After about 3 months the noise you describe appeared from the pulley side of the engine, but only when it was cold, it sounded like a dry bearing noise, and depending on the outside temperature it stayed on anything fron 5 minutes to 20 minutes.

At this point in time our Yaris has been in Inchcape's workshop at least 6 times and off the road, due to this, 25 days so far during which time the following has been replaced:

Alternator

Water pump

Idler pulleys

Pulley on the air conditioning compressor, and the pulley belts have been changed numerous times and still the problem is there.

Two months ago the local Service Manager at the Inchcape dealer (where we brought the car) assured us that a deputation of experts were coming to this country from Japan to investigate this specific problem, and an engineer who is employed by Toyota UK had been given the job to locate these problem cars countrywide to record the engine noises in situ so the people from Japan could then investigate. We were asked if we would take part in this investigation, we agreed, but after two months we heard nothing from them.

In the last week my husband has been in touch with both the Service Manager and the Dealer Principal, and it was obvious from their response nothing had been done.

It seems clear to us that there are more cars with this fault than Toyota care to admit. I suggest you could perhaps get your Service Manager to liase with Inchcape at West Bridgford, Nottingham.

Telephone Number 0115 9825000.

Hi,

I'm currently having the same problem on my 1.3, however i am 400% sure what it is. I sprayed a bit of belt ease on the power steering and alternator belts and it seems to have gone away temporarily, so i'll get them replaced!

Might be the same issue methinks!

Hello,

Yes, I think its the same problem, but spraying the belts with silicone only temporarily solved the problem and the noise has always returned after a short time. As you will see from my posting above we have had all the belts changed several times and this has not fixed the problem.

After all the belts were changed the noise went for 4 months, but it always comes back.

We are at our wits end!

Maybe time to take some legal action, sounds like the product is not suitable for the purpose it was intended with regard too the longevity of the product.

Maybe give Watchdog a call, they seem to have influence on the speed and way in which things are dealt with, due to their TV stuff.

erm.....

I get this problem to, but what's the fuss? really?

It's only when it's cold or been raining

It's only for a couple of minutes (when the car needs to warm up, like the temp and oil)

And finally it's a rubber belt, probably needs warming up to become more plyable?

Have you tried changing to belt made of a different material, envy do some i think, kevlar?

Hi,

I don't think I'm making a fuss when my car sounds like a bag o' nails, and I've paid £12,000 for the privilege!

Do you work for Toyota?

We have a Corolla Verso which has now been in the garage 4 times for what can only be described as a sound which rivals a canary sat under the bonnet. My 1.0l Yaris made a rattley noise until it was warm, when you couldn't tell it was running.

The Corolla has had new belts, new pumps, new everything until they realised they hadn't replaced the belt tensioner and the timer which was done and hey presto at the moment it's gone!

If your car is less than 18 months old and the dealer has been given many chances to put right the problem then you are totally within your legal rights under the sales of goods act to reject the vehicle and demand a new one.

Simply explain to them that the vehicle is not of merchantable quality and that you wish to reject the vehicle. They will refuse and offer to fix the car again... let them. But make sure you get written proof that if it isn't fixed tjhis time then they will replace the car for you free of charge.

If it's outside of 18 months old, then you can still argue your case with Toyota's head office who should make you an offer for your car and allow you to swap for a new one at a cost-to-change of about £1000.

Good luck with it all!
