I'm picking up a 1995 Lucida 2.2TD (Auto), and as usual AFTER you put down a deposit you trawl the net... just in case... and to be honest after reading this site I'm a bit scared I've made a huge booboo, it was between the Lucida, a Volkswagen Shaarn and a Ford Galaxy, I imagined the Toyota would be the more reliable and the diesel more economic, but after reading a few pages of this board I'm kinda worried about my descision, can anyone put my mind at rest, is the turbo really troublesome, does the oil need a complete change every 6 months, remembering I know nothing about this car... and also what relation is the Previa/Estima to the Lucida... I'm confused... thanks... Del

I think the names are just country differences .. (a lot of early examples are imports).

Hope it's not all bad, either way I'd have thought it may be a bit more high maintenance, but it'll last a lot longer.

Ford? Ha ha ha .

Well it's better than the Galaxy thats a plus point I think... Whats the regular matenance required..???

I was just thinking the usual oil/filters etc .. but I know *nothing* about MPV's, or TD's ..

And I couldn't drive a VW Tracey either ..

Hi Delboy,

The difference between the lucida and previa is the lucida's are about 4/5 inches narrower and only do about 25 - 33 to the gallon as they are quite a heavy bus and most are 8 seats not the standard 7 of the previa, as for changing the oil every 6 months or 7000 miles is good practice for any turbo diesel engine.

If the turbo does fail, it's a pretty easy job to do even for a novice, it took me 6 hours, but if it ever needed doing again i could do it in 3 or less. The turbo cost me £70 on eBay.

Cheers Daz

Hi del,

you are becoming a member of the toyota paranoid club my friend. what you see on these pages are a very small amount of problems compared with the large number of these very reliable vehicles. you do get  a good deal in respect of quality and gismos but the come at a price which means regular servicing which most handy men can do and having had toyota's for many years i can assure you that they are good vehicles. galaxy's are prone to faults as are sharans its just that you are not looking at the problems they have. my advice to you is buy and enjoy.

regards

brian

hi del

you have made the right decision.the lucida if by far the best.

even with all seats used there is a huge boot area.the others dont come close.most people worry about the problems on the page but it will be rare you get any as long as you do the basics oil and fuel filters and air filters.most exhaust centres will do it all for you for less than 50 quid.

enjoy your ride.if you get a problem someone on the site will have an answer. welcome aboard.
