Help - What Is An Induction Coil?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking into buying a MkII Turbo and test drove a lovely Black T-Bar Turbo last night. The seller told me it had an induction coil fitted to it but couldn't really explain what it did.

Also, every time I took my foot off the accelerator (aftering flooring it so the turbo kicked in) there was a strange low noise from the engine which he said was the coil. <_<

Is that right? What should the induction coil sound like?

Thanks in advance,

Never heard of an Induction Coil - I think the owner is confused. The car may have an induction Kit - but this is a replacement to the usual air filter. Basically it can allow more air into the engine - increasing performance a little, perhaps 2-5BHP. However, if one of these if fitted (usually looks like a cone rather than the usual rectangle air box) it needs to be protected by a heat sheild between the cone and the engine. The original air box takes air in from a specific location. Because an induction system is larger - it takes air from everywhere - including a hot engine - which can actually decrease your performance since hot air contains less oxygen etc.

The induction system should sound quite "breathy" - you should be able to hear the Turbo sucking the air into the engine. Not sure about the low noise though - since I've only driven one MR2 Turbo with an Induction kit and that was over five years ago!!

I would be a little wary, the owner doesn't sound like he knows what he is talking about - unless there is such a thing as an induction coil in which case.... I stand coorected.:)
