Power Loss After New Water Pump Fitted

Hi all,

I'm new to TOC, I own a 1987 st162 celica convertible with a 3SGE engine.

It had an over heating problem, so I replaced the water pump and this proved to be the root of the problem, no more overheating! :) Unfortunately after starting up the idling was at 500rpm rather than its usual 700rpm at idle, so I took it for a drive and discovered it had very slow take off and it wouldn't go above 65mph. I did a compression test and all cylinders were the same, so figured it probably isn't the head gasket. I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas? :help:

I was pretty sure the timing was spot on after I replaced the timing belt, but I can't think of anything else it could be. I have owned the car for 2 years and this was the first major work I have had to do, I'm gradually restoring it and using it as a second car, I love it! But this is frustrating that it isn't running quite right and I would appreciate any advice on what else it could be or maybe something I missed??

Also, can anyone recommend where to get new wings for this same car?

Any help would be appreciated,

thanks,

Gus

Might be worth rechecking the Cam timing again or,

1) Check Ignition Timing with Te1+E1 bridged - if the timing is way out, then you you prob.have a problem with the Cam Timing.

2) Check to see if any vacuum pipes have come off/split during the Water Pump change.

did you have the diagnostic ports bridged when setting up the timing? this is a common fault as people forget

On my 1994 3s-fe this lasted for a few hours until the ecu sorted itself out again. Tru going a decent run.

just thinking now how long has it been since u did the job?

Is it missfiring? It sounds like an ignition or fuel injector problem to me. Idle speed is under closed loop control of the ECU, so the only way it can be low is something outside of it's control.

Thankyou for your help. I stripped it down again and discovered the timing was out by 1 notch, sorted it and built it back up - running great again, with a fully functioning waterpump! Thankyou again.

Hi, turned out the timing was out by 1 notch, so sorted it and got it right this time, running great again with no over heating and a hot heater! Thankyou for your help!

Hi, spot on, timing out by one notch, so stripped it and rebuilt it, sorted. Running better than ever! Thankyou for your help.
