Offside Rear Knocking

Have become the proud (hopefully not short lived) owner of a (new to me) 2l petrol RAV4 VX. The car has an immaculate history with low mileage and was bought from the main dealer that supplied it originally and has serviced it regularly.

Unfortunately as I don't have the financial clout to buy one new, but was very specific about my choice, I ended up travelling 200 miles to buy the car I wanted. On the way home a distinct and worrying knocking noise developed from the offside rear of the car when going round left hand bends. This wasn't there when I visited three weeks previously for the test drive.

I really don't want to take the car all the way back, even though they have agreed to look at it, particularly as they claim to have done the major 40k service and MOT'd it prior to my taking delivery.

My father-in-law is a local mechanic and has checked over the brakes, bearings, etc. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
