Signed up for the extended warranty for my 2003 Rav4 D4D. After pricing up after market warranties the Toyota seemed good value. It cost £600 payable over 10 months interest free for a two year warranty. A bonus is you also get two free years membership to Toyota club with breakdown cover included. Originaly i decided not to extend the warranty but after reading some of the horror stories on the forum i thought it might make sense. What do you guys think?

warranties are regulated by FSA reg's so dodgy selling via the web but can cost a lot less than you have paid depending on the dealer. I sell warranties through the car chain I work with and to be fair they are great products, parts, labour and roadside through Green Flag. If your car is under 7yrs (might be 10) and you want a warranty just pop down to your local dealer (doesn;t necessarily have to be a toyota dealer either...

All i did was book the car in for its first mot and service, Had a few things changed under warranty (four new wheels and a new stereo ) and filled out a form and off you go. For you guys who are thinking about a warranty be aware that corrosion of the wheels is not covered by Toyota's extended warranty. Mine had some small bubbles forming under the paint and they were change no questions asked.

As i suspected after market warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on, see this in the small print on the Warranty Direct site.........

"Breakdown means the sudden and unexpected failure of a part arising from any permanent mechanical, electrical or electronic fault, which causes the part to stop working, and means that it needs repairing or replacing before it will work properly."

What that means to you and me is "FAILURE ONLY ", so if you have a noisy gearbox or wheel bearing its not covered untill it breaks ! fat lot of good that is!

Having been service manager in Motor Trade for 25 years I can only confirm what Bob King has written.

There are some independant companies but none that I know of are true "Warranty" they all come under the banner of "Mechanical BREAKDOWN Insurance.

This caused many problems with customers who had been sold these polices without full explanation.

Also be wary as many major car dealers (including franchised) use these companies to underwrite the "warranty" sold or given with 2nd hand cars

The two year Toyota warranty i have just taken out at the cost of £600 covers almost everything the original warranty covers except a few questionable items,

1. corrosion to road wheels

2. interior trim

3. Battery

4. paintwork and body work

5. window and door lock adjustment

6. lights,bulbs and headlight adjustment

7. glass replacement

8. brake and clutch adjustment

9. drive belt adjustment

10. serviceable items.

Seems pretty fair to me. The only question you have to ask yourselves is do you think £600 for two years peace of mind is worth the money? I think so.

Bob's highlight made my mind up... (I was thinking of Toyota all along  )

I want a part fixed when it's going wrong not stuck in the middle of somewhere on a dark night because it went wrong....

Also I read the policy details and it also states that items not covered: (B) damage to any insured part caused by Breakdown of an excluded part where the Breakdown of that excluded part is caused mainly or completely by wear and tear.

Blimy... If some part not covered causes a major part to fail say the Duel Mass Fly Wheel, it aint covered....no pay out no fixy....:eek:

As an ex-mechanic of over 18 years ,i have seen time and time again what misery after market warranties can cause customers (they always end up out of pocket ,due to not reading the small print), as i said ,most of them are not worth the paper they are printed on, and AS an ex-mechanic i will also be buying a Toyota warranty once my Rav4 has passed 3 years olds.....and remember you only get what you pay for :thumbsup: .

The price i paid was £600 inclusive of vat. It is being paid over 10 months interest free. £60 per month.

It sounds like Mr T is trying to catch you!

It was bought through my local main dealer, Toyota world. I was offered the warranty on my last service just before the original waranty expired. We only have 16k on the clock so it was a big decision as whether we take a chance on reliabilty or pay the money and not worry. What is the cost of peace of mind. It was tempting to put the £600 in the bank just incase anything went wrong but in the end the interst free payments swung it.

Hi,

I got a free Toyota extended warranty and Club Toyota membership when I bought my 2000(X) Rav4 GX 5dr from the local main dealer. Just had the renewal through and it was £465 or £46.50 p/m for unlimited mileage, and £430 (£43p/m) for under 10k miles - including the Club Toyota which in itself is worth a bit, try getting quotes for the same level of full European breakdown from AA or RAC!

I too pondered the cost of renewal, but when you think how expensive a repair can be, it seems to make sense to me.

It seems very unfair but low mileage petrol Rav4's tent to suffer more oxygen sensor failures that average mileage examples, my cars two&half years old and has only done 15000 miles, that puts my car in a higher risk bracket for expensive bills, so i feel the extended warranty is a good gamble against that.

A friend of mine who is an ex-Toyota mechanic said, it not the oxygen sensors that are expensive, but they tend to seize into the catalytic converter and if that happens you also need a new converter, and if that happens that £1000 plus bill  .
