Toyota Hilux '06 New D-4d Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi!

My Toyota dealer yesterday told me that the production of the Toyota Hilux '06 2.5 D-4D has stopped because will soon be introduced a new Euro-4 D-4D engine, with a power of no less than 130 hp.

I contacted the customer service of Toyota Europe and they wrote me that the specifications of this new engine are presently unknown, but that this engine will be introduced during the second half of the year 2006.

Have anyone heard or read other informations about this engine?

I know that in Australia the Toyota Hilux '06 is sold with the same common rail diesel engine of the Toyota Land Cruiser, i.e. the 3.0 D-4D with 163 hp, in the 2WD configuration too. Could this engine be the next?

Thank in advance for every info!

Hi Alberto

I have got one of the new Hilux Double Cab Pick-up's with the D4D 3 litre Engine.

It is an Import from Thailand where most of the Hilux's are made. It is a brilliant engine with 163BHP as you say. Previously I had a Mk111, it was a great truck but with the non turbo engine only giving about 80HP it was not really up to the job of pulling my 16ft Ifor Williams trailer. The new 'Vigo' (as it is badged) with double the power handles it with ease.

I looked at the new UK spec Hilux but with only 102HP it was not much better than the old one, so its about time that Toyota got its act together to fit a bigger engine in the Hilux as it is being left standing by Nissan and Mitsubishi in the Power Stakes!

They really do need to be selling the D4D 3 Litre engine as the new Mk6 Hilux is, I think, a great truck, v.good spec, drives just like a big car, longer wheelbase than before so much more room in the back.

I suppose if Toyota themselves cannot give you a straight answer then we will just have to wait & see!!

Thank you for your inputs.

I did some researches and I found a site where it is reviewed the new Toyota Hilux '05, directly from 2005 Barcelona's "Salón Internacional del Automóvil".

Here is written that: "At launch the new Hilux range will be powered by a Toyota 2.5-litre D-4D diesel engine, featuring a second generation common rail system and a Swirl Control System. It develops 75 kW (102 DIN hp) at 3,600 rpm and up-to 260 Nm of torque (200 Nm for 4x2 versions), making it ideal for both work and leisure applications. This highly fuel-efficient unit offers low running and low maintenance costs. The powertrain line up will be expanded in the future, starting with an intercooled version of the 2.5 D-4D next year.".

The last sentence make obvious that the next engine of the Toyota Hilux '06 will be the existing 2.5 D-4D engine fitted with an intercooling system and tuned to match the Euro-4 anti-pollution limits. Moreover the word "starting" in the last sentence could make think that there could be in the future the 3.0 D-4D 163 hp engine also, obviously Euro-4.

Almost all the main competitors of the new Toyota Hilux have last generation turbodiesel intercooled common rail powerful engines: the Isuzu D-Max has 101 hp (2.5) or 131 hp (3.0), the new Mazda BT-50 has 146 hp (2.5) or 158 hp (3.0), the Mitsubishi L200 2.5 has 136 hp, the Nissan Navara 2.5 has 174 hp.

So it isn't unreasonable to think that the new 2.5-litre D-4D intercooled engine of the Toyota Hilux could have no less than 130÷140 hp.

However if somebody hear or read some new info about this engine I will be happy to read the inputs.

Thank you.

Hello Mate,Toyota have been fitting the 3.0d in the hilux for years now.I't just that it's never been available officially in the uk.For instance in the UK LC colarado ,you can't get an intercooled engine whereas on some imports its fitted. All i can say in the uk we do get a raw deal an motors.

like vigoman i've now got a 3.0ltr vigo i've also had a 2.5 intercooled version(written off) the 3.0ltr is definately more powerful as the 2.5 was approx 125bhp. there a dozens of dealers selling the imports which are of a much higher spec than the uk (south african built) equivalent. i went to a toyota dealer and added up the cost of the options to bring it up to the thai spec. it would have been over £6000 extra on top of u k price not forgetting that the uk one had a poor engine.

if you want to check out the spec on line then search google for soni motors in thailand. they tell you everything you need to know even the 2.7 petrol version is explained.

Soni Motors Thailand - Toyota Vigo (Hilux).

There is an intercooled version of the 2.5 D-4D engine that develops 120 hp (88 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 320 Nm at 2,000 rpm. I hope that when this engine will be marketed in Europe the Euro-4 anti-pollution tuning don't will make lose much hp and Nm, but I don't think so, indeed.

I hope that will be also marketed the 3.0 D-4D engine that develops 163 hp (120 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 343 Nm at 1,400÷3,400 rpm.

Hi!

londra_motor_show_2006_61.jpg

From 20th to 30th July 2006 it will take place in London the "British International Motor Show", but in the list of car premières and launches it does not appear the new Hilux 2.5 D-4D intercooler.

However I think that it could be possible that Toyota will display this pick-up here.

Thus if somebody visit this motor show and see or hear some news I would be very happy to read the inputs!

not quite answering the question but if its power you want the nissan navara has 174bhp standard, a bigger bed, and has 2wd Hi, 4wd Hi & 4wd Lo as standard on all models!!

Rhaines,

thank you for your kind hint, but I'm looking for a simple single cab 2WD pick-up and the single cab version of the Nissan Navara is not available in Italy. In my case the Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D Single Cab 2WD is at the moment the best choice, because it has an excellent value for money and the longest bed of its class (2.315 meters!). Moreover I don't want a 4WD system because it has more detriments (higher fuel consumption, higher mass, bad performances) than advantages (better traction on mud and snow). However the Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D Single Cab 2WD has a rear limited slip differential as standard.

Below there is a comparison scheme between the Italian prices of the Toyota Hilux and its main competitors.

- Isuzu D-Max 2.5 TD Single Cab 2WD - 101 hp - Euro-3 - € 17.716 (£ 12,196)

- Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D Single Cab DLX 2WD - 102 hp - Euro-3 - € 17.450 (£ 12,013)

Dear Keith/Alberto:

My question is why we are waiting for Toyota Europe to release Vigo when we can import directly from Thailand from reputable vendors as Soni Motors (www.sonimotorsthailand.com). I'm thrilled with my Vigo. Only 6 days after I had send my money to Soni they had my Vigo onboard a ship heading my way. It is a beautiful machine, it drives beautifully and always attracts an audience wherever I go. I will certainly recommend self-import of a Vigo. Even though I ordered a RHD but I read on their website that they also offer converted LHD and original LHD Vigo.

Thanks,

Dave

Davevigo,

thank you for your kind advice, but I am waiting the new Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D intercooler mainly because it will be an Euro-4. In my case this is a very important feature because here in Italy there are severe traffic restrictions for vehicle that don't meet the Euro-4 standard. I'm sure that Soni Motors is exporting worldwide only Euro-3 Toyota Hilux, so I think that the best thing to do is to wait the marketing of the new Hilux 2.5 D-4D intercooler Euro-4.

However I absolutely prefer an original LHD vehicle rather than a RHD vehicle converted to a LHD vehicle later, also if the work looks perfect.

Alberto:

I emailed Soni Motors (sonivigo@gmail.com) on this issue and this is what they told me. Any Vigo that comes to Europe will come from the Thai plant and Euro-4 will also be released first in Thailand, most likely next month. And it is going to be cheaper in Thailand no matter what.

Cheers,

Dave
