Need some advice as to what MIGHT be causing the boost to hesitate on a turbo that i test drove today.

It first happened after driving hard for 5 mins and then after that it was happening all the time, Especially in 4th.

Shame as it really was a nice car and it had every goody you can think of.

Please help or do you think I should walk away?

K Plate, 60k, S/H, F1 tyres, interior in VGC, mint body/paint. Cruise control, Traction control.

Cheers

was the boost gauge failing to go all the way to the + mark? if so it could be due to it being ran on low grade fuel - turbos should only ever be run on optimax otherwise they go into 'safety' mode to stop them detonating. mine would limit boost after a few minutes if i was boosting when i used super unleaded.

if using optimax doesn't make a difference then it'll be the plugs, leads or dizzy.

Would it be pointing to turbo failure?

Thats all i'm worried about!

The car was boosting fully upto the top and the guy did say he runs it on normal unleaded! But he's had it for years and always put that in, so surely he can't be driving a car thats not running right for so long, could he?

Thanks

mr2 turbos are designed to run on 100 octane fuel, unleaded is only 95, that's a long way short, people even warn of using super unleaded as at 97 it's also too low.

Unleaded will prevent it full boosting, for the first few times it'll full boost but then the ecu will realise what fuel it's using and run in 'safe' mode. if unleaded was good for the engine it wouldn't run in 'safe' mode. to be honest i'd steer clear of it if he's been running it on unleaded for years, he might've done some serious damage to the pistons from using poor quality fuel. only optimax will do on a turbo.

i'd be worried about the state of the engine internals. turbo failure would be unlikely as it hasn't even been boosting to its standard spec most of the time. if he's been running it on unleaded for years i'd be worried about what what other things he's done to significantly shorten engine life such as not letting it cool down after a decent drive.

best avoided i think.

I'll think I'll leave it then. Shame as it was very clean :(
