Hi folks,

My 1990 4x4 Hilux Pickup seems to struggle to know when to turn off the automatic choke. Its not all the time, most mornings I simple drive for about 5 mins then it calms down, but some mornings I drive all the way to work (45 mins) and its still on, I pull up to a junction and it sounds like its going to take off. I'm guessing at the automatic choke, maybe its something completely different, when its been doing it, when I eventually turn off the engine to get out, it 'runs on', by that I mean instead of just stopping, the engine continues to idle getting faster until it cuts out, any ideas?

Recently I've changed the plugs, air filter and fuel filter, could I have put something back wrong?

You say you changed the plugs, assume you mean the glow plugs as your profile say's it's a diesel, also it will not have an automatic choke being diesel.

It sounds like you might have a pipe off around the air intake or one of the vacuum pipes that go to the pump.

Thanks for the reply. My profile is out of data, just updated it, I now have a 2.2 Petrol. I changed the spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter...

I have the same engine in my truck. It does the same thing. The thing is, if you look at the choke it is actually working properly in my case. If you are at idle, blip the throttle sharply - do the revs reduce? Mine usually do. I am going to lubricate the choke plate linkages again as that seemed to improve the situation before as well. When your engine is up to temp, pull on the linkage that is holding the choke flap open (assuming it actually is open when up to temp, which it should be - if not there is your problem) and you should feel the vacuum diaphragm resisting you. Just make sure the linkages are not introducing too much resistance for the diaphragm to overcome.

As I say mine is not working 100% either and I am not totally sure why, have to investigate a bit more.

Have you checked your filter system further? I have a feeling that one of the filter might really the reason behind this or rather the carb choke.

I have a1995 Rav 4 the choke seems to stick on but seems the temperature is a factor. If I start the engine and leave it to run it will eventually calm down and idle at about 700 rpm and the temp gauge will read normal. When driving even motorways the temp gauge rarely gets above about a quarter,and on exiting motorway the first stop and the engine will be idling at about 1100 rpm. Cold days and the engine revs higher,really warm days and the temp gauge will just about get up to normal running temp.

Any ideas?
