Hi there albundy. Dont know wheather this is the same sort of thing but when changing down through the gears to slow the car down (more noticably from say 35-40mph) i hear a sort of muted throaty whizzing sound. Up to now i've believed it to be a characteristic of the engine but i do wonder...?

Have there been any updates on the noise you were expierencing since???

If it's a high speed whizz, then its most likely the air pump for emissions when the engine is cold.

To check, start the engine, say tomorrow morning and put your ear down beside the passenger front bumper infront of the wheel. Thats where the pump is.

Hi Guys...back again... On the topic of noises, (im a complete newbie to all engine related components by the way so please advise) When I put my foot down (mainly in either 2nd or 3rd) just before the RPM reaches lift at 6000rpm i get a kind of buzzin that seems to originate as if just at the very front of the dash board (although its probably coming from somewhere under the bonnet)???

The sound itself isnt that bad at all. I was just wondering if it was normal and if not - is there anything that can be done to rectify it.

Thanks again guys!

Hi everyone,

I get a similar, buzzy noise when downshifting too. It seems to happen when i either rev upwards of 3000rpm and then lift off or shift down and when the clutch is released the revs are above 3000.

It sounded like a harmless buzzing of some metal components not quite fitting together correctly.

I have listened to every part of the engine bay and cant hear it from there. So im thinking is conimg from behind the dash, most likely the stereo.

Took it to toyota dealer and they had a spin in it and confirmed it was a component rattling around the rear of the dash/console somewhere. They said they could sort it out but it would need left in with them for a few days. :(

The noise isnt that irritating that i could do without the car and use pubic transport for a week. So I thanked them and left :D At least its not a proper mechanical fault.

Im getting a new Alpine DVD double DIN head unit in soon anyway so ill maybe get the audio guys to take a nosey while the stereo is out.

Good luck with the other rattles guys!

Hi all! Know im only new was just reading your post and was thinking that the noise your referring to mite be the system check that the cts performs when first being started. If you read the manual for the car it does actually say not to be concerned about it as it is perfectly normal. Possibly what your hearing?

it may be the fuel pump just putting the fuel through the line. Also when you start listen out for the brakes making a clunking noise this should just be the ABS checking itself out.
