I've just recently got some t-sport wheels and they need a little re-furb, just a bit of bubbling i think its called oxidization? Just wondering if anyone know how you can re-furb them yourself ?

If they are under warranty take them back to Mr T ...... it's a well know problem with the wheels that you have described

Ive got a set that I got powder coated black - means that they're a breeze to clean and cant corrode.

If you're gonna do then urself Id have a chat to Knightrider - hes done more sets now than I can count!

Is it easy to re-furb yourself, is there a 'How To' anywhere, and can i get paint to match the existing colour?

T-Sport alloys are OEM Toyota centrebore, 54.1, so you will not need centering rings. The alloys are OEM fitment. You would need the rings if they were aftermarket wheels with a different centrebore.

Cheers

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to bring up a mega old thread but re: alloys bubbling that are still under warrantly - whats the script with Toyota changing them? Is it a well enough known fault for them not to argue about it?

My warranty is up in July and there's is bubbling on every alloy.

Yes, Toyota alloys are, almost without exception, rubbish.

I had several sets on my Celica; the first set took a bit of discussion, but these days I think most dealers are well used to replacing them.

Just make sure you've not kerbed them (don't know how you get on if you have) and have only used the approved method of cleaning them - i.e. no harsh solvents, check your manual on this.

And note that the warranty seems to extend by 1 year when you get a new set, or at least it does with Lexus and I'd imagine Toyota would be the same. So on my Lexus I had a new set at about 2 years 11 months and 28 days, another new set 1 year later, and will be asking for at least the front two, if not all four, to be replaced in a couple of months time when the car is 5 years old. Yes, that's two sets of wheels in a row that have failed inside 12 months. I love Toyota and Lexus cars, but why they can't make decent alloy wheels is beyond me.

I couldn't agree with T600 more. Toyota alloys are rubbish! Mine had a new set on after a year and a half. Now, just under a year later I've noticed the tiniest bubbles appearing. Will be asking for a new set before the warranty runs out. Beyond that, I don't know if Toyota do extend the warranty by a year for each subsequent set. I fear that might be a privilege for Lexus owners only!! T600, did you get some documentation/written warranty when you had new alloys fitted?

But back to the question by Yaris girl, there should be no trouble in requesting a new set. You'll have to point out the bubbles on each wheel but that doesn't sound like a problem.

Whats strange though is that not all t-sport alloys seem to be affected. I saw a 51 plate the other day and the wheels were in a shocking state - rust all over. Then I saw an 03 plate which didn't have any obvious signs of rust. My 2005 ones were rubbish and so are this replacement set.
