Carina E Boot Space

Carina E CD M reg

I wonder if anyone might be able to help me with this strange question.

It looks from inside my boot that I can increase the size by somehow pushing through into the rear passenger compartment, except I cannot for the life of me see how its done.

There is some kind of panel that looks like it can be opened at the back of the boot.

There is a button on top if the back seat, but when I push the button in, nothing happens.

I have tried lifting up the back seat, but I start to get concerned that I am about to do some damage as it appears that all I am going to do is rip the seat off from its base.

Thanks for any help

Is it a 5 door?

The rear seats each have a central catch which securs them to the floor. This is released by pulling on a short strap which is located roughly centrally where the seat back meets the seat base. Stick your fingers in and feel around - it's just slipped behind the cushion. The seats will hinge forward into the rear footwells. Then the buttons you found on the chair backs are depressed to allow them to hinge forward.

If you can't find the straps I think you can unbolt the seat bases by first removing the (four) plastic clips which are just beneath the seat base in the footwell.

If its like my old 4 door corolla the rear seat bases were one-piece. You will see metal clips (two) just beneath the material of the base in the footwell area. These are pulled in the direction of the front of the vehicle. The base will then come out of the car as one. The backs of the seats can then fold flat as described. Unless the base is removed the backs will not fold flat.

Well, the mind boggles

I decided to lift up the rear seat again.

It lifts off of 4 poppers.

I really don’t think the seat is supposed to come off in order to gain more boot space; the rear of the seat still won’t pull down once the seat base is removed.

Also, even if removing the seat base did do the trick (which it doesn’t), I would have still been left with a !Removed! great lump of rear seat base to store somewhere else in the car if I needed to increase boot space while away from home, if you see what I mean.

There must be something really obvious that I need to do, but what?

Hi, dunno if you have this sorted yet, and I hope it helps if you havn't

I have a '94 Carina E 4 door, and to fold the seats you do the following (picture attached)

1. Open the boot

2. Ensure that the lock is in the upward (unlocked) position

3. Press the button

4. Pull the seats down

Sorry again if this is really simple stuff, but I figured you may have missed the locks on the back.

the way i always do it is to place the seat base just behind the driver and passenger seats and it fits just snug when you fold the seats down, the headrests keep it held in place and it gives plenty of space :)

if ya want a photo of how i do it lemme know :D
