Hi peeps. I have an engine squeak/squeal when car is ticking over. It doesnt pick up speed when I rev the engine....what could this be? Getting louder now.

Cheers

Water pump, alternator bearing, tensioner pulley, air con clutch, in the order I would be looking at them.

Try rulling stuff out listening very carefully. You can use a metal pole, screw driver, jack handel to place on the engine, alternator and other bits and listen to the different noises they make.

If you think it is the alternator you can take the aux drive belt off and listen to it without the ac and alternator units connected.

Be careful if you are going to use the pole/screwdriver to listen to the engine. Dont have anything dangling, jewlery etc, and watch very carefully how you move it about and place it on different parts while the engine is ticking over.

hi sorry to interrupt, the wd40, where exactly did you spray it? on the belt? on top of it? under the belt? or the thing that holds the pulleys? am i making any sense here?

it only takes 10 to 20 mins to fit a new AUX belt ,or if you want a temp repair try silicone spray from Halfords on the belt/ pullies after removing the plastic cover to gain access :)

If you look at my earlier post i have resolved this problem by replacing the Auxillary drive belt ( http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=67895 ) It is an easy job to do, even i did it! it cost only £10 odd for the belt and will take even the most complete novice half an hour to fit with no specialist tools. I would advise against using wd40 or the like on the belt, for example if its the water pump failing your just masking the warning signs instead of reacting to them.

Look after your celica and she'll look after you.
