1990 Corolla Gti Idle Problem

Hi all.

I have developed a small problem with my 1990 Corolla GTi.

It runs fine when cold but just latley it has started to play up once warm

When pulling up at junctions and stopping it sometimes stalls.

The revs go right down (sometimes almost zero) and the stalls. other times it will go right low and then will come back up to about 500rpm but the needle on the rev counter is wabbling.

I have already changed the spark plugs and air filter but after that I am lost. I was told I could try increasing the Idle but I have no clue how to do this.

Thanks in advance for any help

cheers

I had the same problem when i changed my air system to an induction kit but didnt change the idle position.

what you can try is take the Battery wires off and then put them back on, this is supposed to reset your ECU settings.

but your idle nut is attatched to the throttle cable, its a little nut which has a Allan key slot in the middle, adjust this till about 0.8-1.1

Hi, I also have a similar problem. When my engine is warm the idle position is above 1000revs, I'm not sure if this is normal?? Where could i find this throttle cable?

Could be one (or a combination) of two things.

Either the MAP sensor has faulty connections or your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) on the side of the throttle body needs adjusting.

If your engine is either under or over idling, you really need to get the timing checked, but minor adjustments can be made with the idle valve screw (might be wrong terminology here) also on the side of the TB (sometimes hidden by a rubber lug).

This photo is of the 4A-GE in my MR2. It shows the black TPS on the front of the TB and just to the left of it is the idle adjustment screw (under the round silver cap).

The inlet manifold on the GTi is to the rear of the engine bay, but should show up similar components
