'93 Corolla Le (1.8litre Engine) Puzzling Problem...

Hi there folks!

Wonder if someone has had similar problems. The mileage on the car is about 130,000 miles. The problem is that the car 'hesitates' while accelerating. While idling, it does the same thing and the rpm goes between 800 and 500 back and forth. When i start it initially, it acts completely fine. After a while however, it starts shaking and hesitating with the rpm going below 800 periodically. At higher speeds (>65mph) it shows no signs of any anomalous behaviour.

I tested the spark plugs and they seem to be working fine. I then took off each of the connectors for the fuel injectors one by one while the car is idling. When i take off 1, 2 and 3, the car starts acting up badly. However, when i take off 4rth connector, there is little difference. I showed it to a mechanic and he was convinced one of the fuel injectors (4rth one) was bad. So I changed the spark plugs and I changed the fuel injectors (no kidding!). The problem remains exactly the same.

I am at my wits end to solve this problem. One of my co-workers suggested i switch the connectors on the fuel injectors and then test them individually to see if the same (4 th) injector is messing up. I will do that today. Other than that, me and my friends are completely puzzled by it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome! Please note that the mechanic already suggested getting it checked out at a diagnostic center but they charge upwards of $120; money which i really do not have.

Thanks for looking!

My corolla 1993 has the this problem whenever stop the engine shake and then stall.

I change spark plugs, distributive cap, pcv valve, rotor, fuel filter, nothing help.

I am thinking maybe the transmission.

Hope your friends can give it a look, and please tell me if you fix the problem, because i don't know any thing about mechanics.

Thanks alot.

Yeah, i will definitely let you know if anything works out. While the engine was hot, (thats when the problem manifests itself) I swapped the fuel injector cables and its still the same injector which is causing trouble. Anyhow, I am now gonna look at the following to see if any of these are causing the problem.

-fuel pressure regulator

-oxygen sensor

-mass air flow sensor

-ignition coil and distributer

-timing belt?

-EGR valve?

Will post here if i resolve the problem.

I recently had a different problem with mine recently, but it may be the same deal. My 97 was over heating due to getting too much fuel. The computer thought the engine was always cold, so it was always putting in too much gas. So I had the wires, plugs and, the pvc and the fuel temp sensor (what's it called) replaced, and it runs strong. Maybe you should take it to a fuel and ignition specialist.
