Reprogramming A Used Key

I have a 2000 1.8SE and have acquired a used transponder key:

has anyone tried the procedure on the thread:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...l=ignition++key

I am wondering about a couple of points before I give it a go:

(i) Will this procedure work on a USED key or will it only work on virgin keys?

(ii) Is there ANY RISK WHATSOEVER to my existing keys? I mean if I make a mistake will my existing keys be ruined??

(iii) I have been told that I won't be able to 're-blade' my new key - Is this true? My plan is to use a 'non-transponder' key in the lock but with my freshly coded key attached to it on the same key-ring.

priustech - this one is for you I think!!

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

if you get an un-chipped key it won't start, there is a triordial coil in ya column, that "talks" to the chip in the key and switching the immobalisor "off", you could always take the chip out and tape it to the ignition barrel ;)

I appreciate that, but if I can reprogram my new key and if it is on the same key-ring as the non-coded key, surely the ignition will start??

Possibly, but you may find it is a bit intermittant.

I tried this on a vauxhall once and it all seemed to depend on where the transponder was. It did not always work if it was just hanging on the same key ring, although if I held the transponder against the airbag it would work every time. Mind you that was only on a Vauxhall so it may not follow.

I guess your main problem is recoding the key - sorry I cannot help there.
