Had a complete failure of the full screen sat nav in my 2004 Rav XT4 earlier today - has anyone experienced anything similar. Totally blank screen for a few hours, then it came back but had to reload the system.

Hi Mooranger, sorry to hear about your sat nav failing but it seems ok now is it,

I noticed you have got a rear view camera can you give me some details and costs to fit this, i have a new Rav 4 XT5 Auto with sat nav and i had a camera on my last car Lexus RX300 and i really miss it on the Rav even though i've got parking sensors. Baz

I think the sat nav overheated as I took it out this morning and noticed the fan was not turning. After a bit of playing around insode the unit it seems to be OK now.

Anyway, as for the reversing camera, a fairly simple mod. I bought the camera off eBay (search for 'reversing camera') for about 20 quid (it has to be an image reversing cam otherwise you will get the wrong image on the screen - ie it will make you turn the wheel the wrong way!). The format needs to be NTSC as well to make it compatible with the screen.

I powered mine from the reversing lights, and the video feed is via a normal co-ax cable into a 4 pin connector on the back of the unit (pins 1 & 3). If you connect it the wrong way round it won't damage the unit but the pic will be bad - just swap them over.

The camera is small enough to be mounted in the 3rd brake light housing - a dremmel can sort this out! This is where it helps if you buy one of the cameras with a mount that you can change the angle on (2 rings that are rotated) so you can set it to look down at the right angle. I can just about see the top of my spare wheel on mine, as the camera is 'extra wide', whatever that means. It gives the right field of view for reversing as you can see everything.

If you need any more info just let me know.
