Overheating

Not stupid at all Jed50 I appreciate all input especially being such a car dunce myself. I wouldn't actually know how to check to see if the rad is blocked though....

What strikes me as strange is that neither of the fans work (there's two behind the rad). I believe that one is for the air con and the other is to keep the car cool. The blower works in the car though and will blow hot and cold (ish) air. Perhaps it's just a loose connection or something, maybe a fuse, although I have checked them.

I don't know I think it may have to have a diagnostics test.

Sorry mate I dont really know a good way of testing it other than to remove both top and bottom hoses and put a hose pipe in the top and see how fast it comes out of the bottom in relation to how fast you are putting it in at the top! I know it doesnt sound very technical but thats how I suspected the cortina rad. I suppose you could remove it and take it to a rad repair shop and ask them to test it for you, that way you would know for sure. Back in cortina days it was just 4 bolts and 2 hoses off and the rad was off!! Now you have got to take the car half to bits just to change a light bulb. Sorry I cant be more helpful, good luck, Jed.

I still need to sort this out has anybody currently on the forum got any ideas/ advice?

Had exanctly the same problem with my 98 estate.

Check all the fuses and you may well find one of the 10A fuses is blown. It's an obscure one. change it and lo and behold the fans now work and you aint in Aberstwyth with an overheating engine.

Try connecting the fans with wire from the Battery, if they run, here it is.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but having issues with my 1998 Avensis today, was stuck in traffic and noticed my temp needle rise above half way (first time in 3 years of ownership that ive seen this), so instantly pulled over when i had the chance, at this point the temp needle was just below the red.

stopped the car and opened the bonnet and notice the fans weren't working. Expansion tank had the right amount of coolant inside it too.

so waited till the car cooled down and then drove home.

searched on here and ran the test which has been posted on the first page, looks like the thermostat is working as the bottom rad hose became hot well after the top hose.

i then connected both fans to the Battery directly and both span fine - so fans are not faulty.

i then let the car cool down and just been out in it for a spin, took about 5mins for the car to get to normal temperature (which is right), then took a further 15mins for the needle to go above normal and towards red. I let it go just under red and i could hear bubbling, so engine off and sure enough the expansion tank was getting filled.

i tried to look for the fan temp switch on the rad but couldnt find it, the haynes does not mention it

what else do i need to look for? i tried to pull the temp sensor from the thermostat body but will not budge, will have try again tomorrow.

do you think it is the temp sensor faulty here?

btw my engine management light does not come on indicating there is a problem.

any help much appreciated

Thanks

This all sounds very familiar as had overheating problems and the fans weren't working. It was one of th ten amp fuses in the fuse box behing the coin tray. Even more obscure was that it was not marked fans but something like Aux. Recheck the fuses .
