well youd be better off getting a 4A-GZE engine and turboing that or bung in a 3S-GTE.

the std 4A-GE isnt strong enough to handle much boost

you'll have to make your own turbo kit, and possibly rebuild the engine. i dont think anyone makes a comprehensive kit for the 4age

Thes might fit, the 2nd one may need a bit of a bonnet buldge tho! But like whats been said, you will have to use the 4A-GZE to fit a turbo, as they are stronger, lower compression ratio etc etc!

  • 10 months later...

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have just got a GTi and I would like to turbo it. I am not interested in running high boost to start with and have been told by loads of mr2 mk1 owners who have turbo'd their 4age that it can be done. Can someone shed some more light as I dont have the money to buy a gze to convert.

Ps I have 7 rib block red top.

I would also be intrested to find out what sort of boost the standard pistions can take.

Also would you be able to lower the compression ratio by fitting a couple of head gaskets or would they leak in no time.

What kind of modification would the fueling system require?

I been told that the red top 7 rib can take up to 6psi with standard internals. I have no idea about compression but I was planning to get a Supra fuel pump and a piggyback ecu for fuelling.

Oh yeah and uprated injectors maybe.

to be fair it would proberly cost as much to turbo the GE as it would to convert to the GZE (done properly that is).

personaly TDI arnt all that IMO.

6psi is about the limit of the GE but even then it wont run it forever.

a GZE swap would proberly set you back about 1500-2000 pounds
