Yaris Diesel Tuning

What kind of power is realistically possible from the Yaris 1.4 turbo diesels? I know a few places are able to offer stage one remaps which take it close to 100bhp but has anyone heard of any pushing over the 100 mark?

I think AlanBradley and Blackbird are the members to speak as they are d4d owners.

got a feeling they are both running around 95bhp, but much more from this engine may lose economy or cause increased maintanance costs.

Yes, I know Alan has chipped his. I'm sure the oil burners will be along soon to answer your question.

you get nice big black clouds of smoke too :)

Only smoke on my car comes from the tyres :P

Yeah, about 95-ish bhp seems to be as good as it gets before you need to do any semi-major surgery. My car has a Jetex panel air filter and a tuning chip from here. Both of these come highly recommended by both b1ackb1rd and myself and are completely removable come service/trade in time ( ;) ). I don't know why this unit is so much cheaper than some others (up to £500 in some cases) as all the different units seem to quote similar outputs.

The next stage would probably be changes to the intake and exhaust systems - maybe a more direct intake system will appear at some time - and relocation of the intercooler to somewhere it can catch more cool air.

Hope that's some sort of help

My tuning box is turned up to the max and there are NO clouds of black smoke out of the back end, none at all. I also have a Fabia PD100 with a tuning box runing a biodiesel mix and this doesn't smoke either.

Incidentally I drove my mother's 1.3 Yaris yesterday and it felt gutless by comparison with the D-4D, I was down to 1st and 2nd gear in places where the D-4D pulls hard in 3rd or 4th - the 1.3 was a right pain to drive.

Focus on the torque figures, forget the bhp.

yeah right..............

my transit has 280ft/lbs of torque!!!! and 90bhp................ there fore it keeps pulling and pulling and pulling. slowly, oh so slowly. you need a nice ballenced mix of both mate :)

Does the Tranny have a turbo? I'd stick a tuning box on that, you could pull tree stumps out then :)

yeah its a TD, i cant imagine how much cooler that extra 25/35bhp would be!!!!! i'll stick to my petrol cars mate :)

Tee hee, if torque matters .. how come bikes move so fast ;)

Torque only matters if you drive a tank ..

Cobblers ... driving a tdi on normal roads is miles quicker than a petrol, once rolling a tdi picks up speed and pulls hard in the 30-50, 50-70 range. Sticking 4 people in the car hardly makes any difference to the performance or economy.

And ... they are not so tiring to drive over long distances, none of your constant gear changes etc.

I drive a diesel cos I like the power characteristics, nothing to do with economy.

What's the torque of your engine ..

The reason I say this is I own a car with no torque (s2000 160 lb/ft) and one with a bit (MR2 Turbo 280 lb/ft). And TBH, only on roads over 130mph (straights at Nur for example) did I find the extra torque made a difference.

Both cars are 190/200 WBHP

I will completely agree with this, just a more driveable power although i am comparing a 1.3petrol to a 1.7cdti, but generally on hills and the like it pulls much better.

Oh and on paper the 1.7cdti compared to a 1.8 16v in the same car, the diesel leaves it by 3 seconds clear on 30 to 70.

I say each to their own.

You know, I was just about to post my argument, but then I realised that Iv voiced my opinion on Diesels far too often! So, i'll sum it up in three words:

Petrols are better.

Petrols are better.

Don't get me wrong, i like driving both, they obviously both have different characteristics.

Torque on a standard 1.4 D-4D is 140ft/lb at around 2k rpm, the tuning box reportedly adds 25% to that so it should be sticking out 95hp and 175ft/lb.

This engine is a beaut, it revs more like a petrol than a diesel and pulls like the bloke in the Lynx adverts :)

yes i do agree you diesel yaris might rape my 140bhp Tsport going up a hill, but the fact is, i'd have owned you coming up to the hill and be nearly at the top by the time you started going up it :P but seriously mate, diesels arent built for performance, there for working, and old people. and if you or all wants to take it on track to prove it........ bring it on :P

Where did you get the Jetex Airfilter mate, I have this tunning box in my Yaris and it does fly. I need the air filter, so please help.

175 ft/lb ?

So you are 15 over me in my S2000 .. and I bet you weigh in less tham my 1250kg ..

I doubt you'll be quicker ;)

I wish someone would bring out a no-nonsense tdi sports car just to shut you petrol Ming Mongs up !!

Unless a T-Sport has a dead straight road leading up to a hill the D-4D would either either in very close touch or in front - you have to whizz a petrol to the redline to get power whereas a diesel gives you stomp where you need it.

Try one before you knock them !!

they wont cause diesels are for grannys and farmers (i know, i work with them everyday) + dont give it all that..... prove it mate. i've got a Tsport here waiting :) i also have an audi a4, 1.9tdi quattro with a tuning box + k&n filter which gives out 150bhp, yeah it feels quicker than my Tsport......... but it isn't

oh & bibbs that only won lemans cuse it didn't need to refuel + all the others crashed cause they couldn't see through the smoke

The thing that pee's me off about petrol vs diesels .. THEY ARE ALL TURBO'S ..

A similar turbo'ed petrol will spank it, spank it good.

153 ft/lb (208Nm), 1260kg = 121lb/ft per tonne .. 0-60 6.0, 150 top speed. (S2000)

125 ft/lb (170Nm), 925kg = 135lb/ft per tonne .. 0-60 12.5, 106 top speed. (D4D)

So a better "torque" to weight ratio.

240bhp = 190bhp per tonne. (S2000)

74bhp = 80bhp per tonne. (D4D)

But half the power .. It's all about the area *under* the torque curve ..

Ah the diesel vs petrol argument :D

I love driving both, the kick you get from a diesel once the turbo spins is awsome (you can feel the torque so well) but I think the are slower than a petrol, its just you cant feel it so much in a petrol because its more progressive, they pull better..but you dont notice as much as its slowly built over 3000 or more RPM, unlike a solid lump of serious power you get in a diesel.

I'd say both are good - especially if you have 95bhp from a Diesel, in a small little Yaris. Thats brilliant - 95bhp doesn't sound much but my T Sport is only 10bhp more, and if you have all that extra torque I bet that makes a FUN car to drive. and probably more MPG too.

who cares if it is actually slower or not, its how fun it is to drive that counts. I bet from 2000rpm to around 3.5 / nearly 4, you are grinning in that diesel :D

the thing stopping me getting a quick diesel is that noise you get when idling in traffic. and that noise you get when revving it... and the noises in between. :P  and the cloud of smoke coming out the back isn't too nice either, particulate filters are slowly getting rid of this though, afaik?

and the fact I love the whole country lane + keeping it above 4000rpm kinda thing - really driving the car, thats where the fun comes from IMO - driver involvement and all that. I want an S2000 ;)
