OK - pretend I've never seen an engine in my life, 'cos it's going to sound like it If I put a CAI kit on my '99 3fse, or just a 57i, do I have to change the stock exhaust to balance intake/ output?

Nope.

But are you prepared for the increase in engine noise? Also, you don't get a massive amount out of those kits on the 3S-FE. I tried the K&N induction kit on mine, but went with the K&N replacement panel filter way in the end. You don't get an increase in noise, but a noticeable increase in torque.

Thanks - you have just saved me from spending on an induction, and looking like a boy racer! I'll replace with a K&N panel.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't like really loud. It's just that the engines in the Rav4 aren't the most insulated from noise anyway, so any increase in noise from the engine is quite noticable.
