:help: Can somebody please tell me what is the problem with the D4-D engine that when you start losing power, the mechanics start smiling!!

I have so far been to 5 mechanics including the toyota garage itself with a problem, I keep losing power in my Toyota Avensis; I have seen nothing in the forums about the Avensis only the Rav 4.

I do on average 200 miles per day, for the first 10 miles its ok, then after that once i get above 2800 revs in any gear the engine feels starved of deisel, second gear being the worst at 2500 revs.

So far I have been told by Toyota that I need a new fuel pump.... end of story ... and at 852 + vat = fitting their 'avin a laugh.

I have also been told that it could be the air intake sensor gone that is feeding false information to the ECU that is feeding false information to the fuel pump.

I have read in the Rav forum that it could be one of the SV valves... but is this the same engine???

I have no idea what may be going on.

My previous car VW Bora TDI (115 PS - PD) W (2000) was a beauty, inside out. It was very quick and highly econimical.

PROBLEM: when the engine had warmed up, it would not bear any boost. Any sort of boost would just kill the revs and the fuel intake. This was common when I was on the motorway. The car would start slowling down and eventually roll to a stop, which practically never happened. The only cure was to restart the engine, and at 80 mph on the motorway, it was not the wisest thing to do at all.

VW dealers took the car in again and again and again, they kept for days on end but still no cure. I then just rid of it, sad to see it go, but it had to.

I can't find the right thread, but members here have reported similar, if not the same, problems on the D4Ds too. Yours could be a similar problem to the one that I'm having.

If the dealers can't do nothing about it, and everyone else that could experiment on it, I'd suggest getting rid of it.

It seems that the turbo isn't that diesel-friendly at all. One kills the other.

From memory I believe they are the same engine in the Avensis as the RAV4 bar some parts...

Mine did not loose power it just never had much get up and go.. Push the pedal down and it slowly speeded up. Mr T thought it was dirt in the filter and cleaned and replaced this.. Worked for about hour.. :ffs: car got worse... Took it back and then they diagnosed faulty High Pressur Fuel Pump..and yes they are expensive brand new :( :(

Took car to different garage (not Toyota) who also do lots of work on 4x4... They tested the AMU (Air Mass Meter) as this can some times go wrong... In the end they sent of the HP Fuel Pump off for a autopsy..

The SV valves are another culprit.. and these should be checked out..

Re-conditioned pump sent back and other work done and 50k sevice later... she is running smoothly and i'm getting 40mpg, no hiccups, no stalling, power when needed and loads of torque, smooth and efficiant as Toyota's should be...

The Denso pumps on Toyotas are one of the expensive parts along with the Dual Mass Fly Wheel, thats why I have taken out a warranty to cover me on these (just) incase they go wrong....

And.... strangely enough tonight I started her up and have had full power and response tonight without a hiccup... is this normal signs for the fuel pump or the sv valves??

Get the SV valves checked out... Mine did the same.

I would be driving along all slowwwwwww then it would just cure its self and wooosh go along great....rather like the old tubo lag in the old saab 900... until I came to a hill or had to slow down.. then back to slow mode again....

It's a real pain trying to solve this type of problem as it can be several mechanical parts... it helps to get a good garage to diagnose it...

Hope this helps

Has anyone ever heard of FORTE diesel fuel cleaner..... what a product

Since I last posted, the problem seems to have totally cleared up!!!????!!!

It was reccomended to me by an old school mechanic who basically told me that if the problem was the fuel pump then the engine would not run, if there was a blockage then the sensors would not work properly.

I told him that I had put redex through and another product MR T sold to me .... he laughed and said try this... at £15 a bottle ... I had a little smoke through the first tank, and  problem gone! smoooooth and powerful again, glides up hills and starts perfectly.

Have now done 7000 miles since I had the first diagnosis  and spent £15 to solve the problem instead of £1500 for starters.

Beware.... some mechanics may profess to know more than you and would rather make an assertive guess on a problem code ... But as I was told

No fuel getting to the engine ... pump has gone

Fuel getting to the engine but no power ... maybe a valve not working properly or stuck but clean the lines first before looking to change anything.

:!Removed!: I was also recommended by someone else to put a litre of cooking oil through as it is more viscous and would lubricate the valves...... not tried ... not needed

Hello,

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an SV valve, where are they and what do they do?

Hello KevD

I am having a similar problem with my Avensis from 2000 with the firtst generation of the D4-D diesel motor.

Will you still recommend the FORTE diesel fuel cleaner? And is this the same product as the FORTE Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment ?

Kind regards

Steen
