Help Wanted Please!

All windows on my Carina E are electric. For some reason the driver's one no longer works - no noises nothing. The windows all share one fuse so I guess that leaves two possibilities: 1) Motor & 2) Switch.

The motor has two wires running to it, a Red & a Green.

The switch unit is pretty much printed circuitry.

:help: wanted:

1) Anybody had this problem & if so, what was the cause?

2) Am I right in thinking that the R&G wires to the motor will each be for a positive with the motor earthing through its body. If so, would one be for 'Up' & the other 'Down'?

3) If that's the case, shouldn't I be able to test the motor by applying a positive to one or other of the motor terminals?

4) If it is the motor, anyone have any idea as to where I may source instructions for its removal? (I've always found anything to do with side windows tricky so don't want to just oik it out).

5) Are the motors interchangeable or are they 'handed' in some way?

6) Any suggestions for testing the switch?

I know these are a lot of questions but I've browsed the posts & am sure that you guys can help with this.

Thanks.

Jus drop a volt meter across the two wires going to the motor when tryin to operate it then you'll see if it's gettin any. Chances are it doesn't earth through the body cause not generally a good idea with moving parts unless there are earth straps.

Through past experience of window motors they change the polarity of the supply to it using the switch. Well they do on the rolls royce ones i've re-wound.

I'm not totally familiar with this type of car...but the power to the electric windows is supplied by the switch. The power is supplied to the middle of the switch..and depending on which side of the switch you press....send the power down tiehr the reg or green cable you speak of and thus raises/ or lowers the windows.

So to test the motor simply connect a 12V source across either cable, and the eart....oh, the earth is usally another contact in the switch...and not the car body.

However this is a "cheaper" setup. I guess your motor will have leccy mirros as well. In this case rather than having load of wiring and circuits. they use "modules" There' can be as many as 25-30 of theses modules per car...so when you push the leccy window button...it communicates with this central door module..which then activiates a relay and raises/ lowers the door...same would happen when moveing leccy mirros..but a different relay is activate....so one question...does your leccy mirror still work....if so...then it's not likly this module.

motors don't usually just pack up.... so more than likely it's the contacts in the switch which have become worn.

Vipes.

:group-cuddles:

Thanks guys, you were right. It doesn't earth through the body & the polarity is changed depending upon the direction of switch travel.

The problem was as Viper_7 said, the switch. In fact the contacts on the drivers window switch had overheated at some point & melted the plastic surround.

Rather than replace the switch I've hacked the wires about so that now the driver's window is controlled by the rear offside switch.

Thanks again.
