T180 Fuel Computer

I'm now the proud and very happy owner of a T180. After a couple of weeks driving around with a big grin on my face :D i've started to get a little concerned over the fuel consumption figures as displayed by the trip computer. How accurate is this device ? it seems strange that just after filling up the range shows just 340 miles

I'm sure its doing more miles than this on the tank full though.

The average fuel consumption when driven fairly hard it shows 29 - 31 MPG even when driven very carefully 37 -39 is the best average it displays. This is well short of the published figures. I haven't as yet worked out the actual mileage and compared it to a tank of diesel to give a true figure though.

Any thoughts ?

Hi,

See my reply in the "Shall I get one" thread - where I report exactly what you mention.

Now, after 800 miles on the clock with the last 120 up and down the fosseway to Stow on the Wold, my computer is showing average consumption of 34MPG - so it's going up! I'll check if this figure is for real at the next fill up.

As an aside, how do you find your T180? I had a Volvo V70 D5 before, and the T180 feels nowhere near as fast from a standing start or for low speed torque. However, in 4th at anything over 40MPH, hitting right foot to the floor, turbo comes in with oomph and you hit 70 before you even notice it.

I also have parking assist - which is really Heath Robinson and not worth the money as far as I am concerned. It's not properly integrated into the dash controls and just beeps - rather than shows you an actual readout of distance to the object - like on the Honda version. Mine gives a constant beep (indicating that you are just about to hit something) at about 10 inches away from the object. For tight parking, I'd prefer that gap to be a little less.

Creamola.

Hi Creamola

I find the same re Standing starts, its seems unless that turbo is spining there is little response. On mine there is a definate lag on pulling away, Makes nipping into the flow at a roundabout rather interesting. I wonder if the low end response was sacrificed to gain the extra performance over the standard 2.2 diesel.

Like you say though once going there is plenty of performance on tap, you have to keep a close eye on that speedo as it has a habbit of creeping up pretty quick.

I was interested about the parking sensors, I was considering fitting some myself but I'm a little worried about drilling the holes in my bumper. Were yours a factory fit? where on the bumper were the sensors fitted, any chance of a Pic?

its all down to the fact that the engine is bedding in. propper power and good fuel ecconemy should be availiable after about 5-10k miles just make sure you bed it in properly, no labouring, no continuous speed for too long, no over reving etc.

In the UK, you can't get factory fitted sensors, they are a dealer fit of a Toyota approved unit - they show in the Toyota price list like they are factory fit though. They seem to be connected to the same thing that makes a bleep when you put the car into reverse and bleep faster and faster the closer to an object you get - with a constant beep at about 10".

I have taken two pictures:

1. Bumper

2. close up of sensor

Note: that the exhaust is a normal exhaust and not chrome, as it says it is in the T180 brochure. Apparently that is a mistake, Toyota says - because the T180 exhaust is too big to be chromed......

Hope that helps,

Creamola.

Thanks for the pics Creamola, Very much appreciated

I may well set forth with drill in hand after all

BTW calculated my fuel economy on my last fill up against miles covered and found the Trip Computor was about 3 MPG under in its calculation.

Don't forget that you need to get sensors that are the same colour as the body paint work!

I did a bit of checking for you, and under the left side rear cluster light cover (the bit you have to pull out to free up the boot cover) I found this controller. It seems like the wires are coming out to the four separate sensors in the bumper (the wires to which are just stuck to the inside of the bumper with gaffer tape...). There is also a red and black wire that it is connected to that is going somewhere towards the front of the car. I presume that this is to the same beeper that fires when you put it into reverse OR if you also have this in your car, then this is the reverse beeper and parking controller all in one - to which you just need to add the sensors.

Well after about 6.5k miles I'm getting between 41 - 44 mpg on mainly motorway journeys which is a lot better than the 25mpg I got from the 2.5 Jag that preceded it!

That's strange...Here in Germany the T180 is offered with Chrome exaust as a Dealer Fit option...in fact I have it fitted.

Regarding the Parking Sensor - Does the UK T180 spec not include Navi with cameras?

Hi There -

I would like a chrome tail piece for my Verso. Does it slide over the existing piece?

Do you perhaps have a pert order number?

Regards

Erwin

Okitsme,

Remember that the average consumption is just that-average.

Set the computer to read actual consumption and watch the figures.

When accelerating and pulling away the figure will be very low, probably around 9 to 11 mpg.

Overrun will give readings of 99 + mpg.

This is why the average consumption always seems be lower than what you calculate when you fill up.

The range on my motor only seems to go upto 355 miles. After filling up I drive approx 100 miles and reset the range. this changes to about 300-to-325 miles giving a total of 410-430 miles which is what I get per tank using the trip meter to work it out.

HTH :D

The highest I've seen for the range of the trip computer is 398 when the tank is filled to the brim. It sticks rigidly to its estimate for the first hundred miles or so and then seems to start recalculating so that overall it would give about 450 - 460 but then drops off rapidly as it gets below 100 miles range. This may have some link to the fuel guage whick is still reading 3 quarters full when the car has done nearly 300 miles on the tank only to plummet through the remaining sectors over the next 100 miles.

Erwin,

When i ordered my Verso the Chrome exhaust was available in the Accessories List. Whilst looking for the Part# to answer your question i found the latest version of the Accessories List on the web - Here it states that the exhaust is not for D-Cat (It does not say this on the copy I have!)

Anyway, Intrigued, I called my dealer - Unfortunately the Stores were closed today so I have to wait for the exact technical reason why the standard chrome part cannot be fitted to the Diesels (something to do with the angle I think). But he explained that the Dealers are getting round the problem by fitting a 3rd party chrome exhaust (company called Spark I think)

You can just about make it out on this pic:

Thanx Harfin -

Looking at your pic, I notice that you have removed the bee-sting.

I have cut mine mid-way to look more sportier.

I have the 1.6 petrol verson. If you happen to come accross the part number for the chrome tailpiece, please send it to me. Here in South Africa, is such accessorie not available, but could the dealer could get hold of the part if I give them the part number.

Much appreciated

Regards

Erwin
