I had a Carina E (K reg) some while back. No probs with that whatsoever.

The Honda, by-the-way did digest the oil somewhere.

Currently Rav4, too soon to check, just bought, just serviced.

right guys, there is a known problem with vvti engines and oil consumption - i have confirmed it at a large toyota dealer - which is part of the large company i work for , its the vvti engines that suffer - so ?????

Yes, it appears there was an issue with some of the early VVTi engines burning oil, i think it was more the 1.8 used in the Avensis that suffered, but i believe that some owners have reported similar problems on the 1.4

If your unsure, get the car checked out by Toyota ;)

Buy a facelifted Corolla E12 and you have no problem with the oil consump

My 1.6 vvti used lots of oil! So much so, I had to put a new engine in!

ive got a 02-plate 1.6 E12 pre-facelift corolla, and it hardly uses oil. I think it was mainly the 1.8 engine which has the oil problem.

My 1.8 vvti avensis uses approx 1 litre of oil every 2500 miles and has had a problem since it reached 40,000 miles. Strange thing is the handbook states that anything better than 600 miles per litre is perfectly well acceptable !!!
