Bet your gonna miss it, especially seeing as the weather is getting nice. I know I miss mine more now the weather is here. :crybaby:

Do you really need a car at Uni? I did my study at Leeds, you? I didn't need one, well had one in my final year but that's because I kept it from when I did my gap year. Was only a Rover 100 anyway :D Weekly shopping to Morrisons.

If I were you I'd put the money away in savings and get something nice when you start work full time. Either that or get a banger for Uni, It'll only get trashed or knicked in studentville!!

When I started my final year of uni last year, I chose to get something cheap that I wouldn't mind letting my housemates drive too... ended up opting for a mint cond' 1987 Corolla Gti for a little over a grand. Its done me good service and was far more reliable than the peugeot I had before it (hardly surprising!). Along the same lines, you could pick up a good Honda CRX vtec (the version before the del sol) for about 2K, maybe less now ... 160bhp, BUT wrong wheel drive

If money isn't too much of an option, why not look at...

Celica GT4

Nissan 200 SX (S14)

Impreza

BMW 328/330 coupe

Peugeot 306 GTi-6

VW Corrado VR6

If your only plannning on keeping it for a year tho, try and buy something that will be easy to sell on, or, in my case, something cheap enough that you wont lose much money on

Afternoon all,

I really enjoyed the ride home in the yellow beast last night - I definitely "made progress" on the A64 once I had got used to driving it :D Just wonder if anybody could offer advice on the following though:

When changing into second gear (from 1st or 3rd) there is a crunching noise unless I wait for approx 5 seconds before engaging it. This seems to be worse when the engine is cold but it's never 100% smooth... Does it sound like something that could be adjusted out or would it be a fundamental gearbox issue?

I have been told that this is a fairly common problem that might be fixed by replacing the gear oil with something higher rated. Does anyone agree with this - if so then would this be a garage job or something that I could do myself?

Apart from that (and the usual 90's Jap car interior build quality ) the car is spot-on to drive.

Andy

Embrolium - sounds usual, its wear on the synco's, changing to redline oil can hide and assist this.

sewelly - There is a nice and cheap ST202 (gen6 celica) in the for sale section. A lot of car for not much cash now days .. and similar to the MR2 in interior style.

Hello Andy n welcome to TOC :) I believe you are on PistonHeads? :P a mate of mine came across a piccy of the Yellow MR2 there ;)

Hi there. i've been on PistonHeads fro quite some time but thought it would be helpful to joing a slightly more specialised forum.

So the verdict seems to be syncro wear - is there any cheap way of sorting this out? Changing the gear oil doesn't sound too difficult (I stand to be corrected on this) but what would be involved?

the oil is a doddle .. it's a simple swap ..

A new g'box is *really* the only solutiong, and they are about £100 plus fitting ..
