The 1.8 VVTi in particular was known for burning oil on engines made in the early 00's, though largely rectified now there have been a few replacement engines and new Avensis that still suffer from it.

Toyota they were offering to replace the engines beyond the initial warranty period on certain cars so it might be worth checking with them first, although the Toyota manual does specify that a litre every 1000 miles I think it said is deemed to be acceptable, it's not to me, but if yours is burning oil in excess of that then you might be able to get a new engine.

My corolla was burning a gallon of oil every 1000 miles but that had only done 48k. The problem was with 1.4 1.6 1.8 vvt-i units from 2000-2002. The corolla was burning oil at 25k and got worse it took me just short of 12 months to get a new engine. Then the dealer messed up the rebuild and that engine let go after 2k. Toyota did extend the warranty to 5 years, I think they put a limit tho of 100k max.
