My Car Is Back With Toyota

Took my car to Toyota yesterday morning and intended to take the technician out for a spin to show him (or her!) what the problems/noises with my gearbox were... but as I was running late I hadn't time.

As it happens I didn't need to... cos they rang me back early in the day to confirm there was a problem: The intermittant rattle I get from the clutch pedal and slight judder on changing down through the gears was down to the gearbox bearings failing! :( It might explain the mass of grease/oil on the bottom on my gearbox and the vibration I get at 70MPH+ on the motorway (I always put this down to unbalanced wheels and the tracking, but had this checked twice)

So by the time they order the parts, strip it down and fix it, it will be Friday evening before I get my car back. I'm glad it's covered under warranty (13k on the clock) and also glad it wasn't a problem they could blame on aftermarket wheels and lowering springs (TTE ones which they fitted).

Will let you all know the outcome and how the car feels afterwards.

Does anyone have a T Sport which doesn't have a problem?

I got mine partly on the strength of personal recommendations regarding reliable and trouble free motoring, in the first three months the dealer had it more than I did, they're getting it back again this weekend...

out of the 9 months i've had mine, its been @ toyota or broke for about 3 weeks of that.

Actually its there now, having an air injector pump(?) replaced. Just had the master brake cynlinder fixed too, and some other niggles. Gotta love those warranties.

I've got a shiny Yaris 1ltr at the moment, what can I say about that, great mpg! mmm mmm mmm :help:

The only problem is the great driving when it does work.

I've had mine 18 months 22,000 miles, its been in once because a rear drum pad had disintegrated, other than that nothing except 2 services, i'm very very happy with mine...

no problems with mine yet touch wood. would be interesting to know if people who had gearbox / clutch problems had modified their cars to get more b.h.p. out of them ?

i had my clutch and gearbox bearings changed at 12,500 miles last year... funny that .... my car was totally standard at the time.... ive done 12,500 miles since, the gear change and clutch are great still, but the tell tale grinding is coming back a bit when engine braking....

Yeah that's how I figured there was something wrong with mine! I've only 13k on the clock now...

When I bought my T Sport I knew the warranty issues that would pop up... it was just a matter of when, not if! As long as it get fixed first time I'm happy. To be honest I've been 99% happy with my dealer too.

If you can tell me one new car on the market that you'd like to have that doesn't have niggly warranty problems, then I'd like to know!

Everyone has their car because it's the one that suits them and their needs. You don't usually slag off your own car! I'm driving my mate's GTi Corolla at the mo. You'd be led to believe by some owners that they to are trouble free motoring... not so - the one I'm driving has the usual gearbox problems, isn't all that powerful etc etc and yet people will still say "they don't make Corollas like they used to!"

no problems with mine yet touch wood. would be interesting to know if people who had gearbox / clutch problems had modified their cars to get more b.h.p. out of them ?

I bought the car with 4.5k on the clock last July and it only has 9k now. I had the auxiliary belt tensioner replaced at 8k, but even when I got the car back there was something still wrong with the car. I let it go 'til now so I was sure there was a problem, so if adding an induction kit at 4.5k gives clutch/gearbox problems 3.5k later then I'm amazed! The problem was there... I just didn't know what it was! My car doesn't get thrashed through the gears like my mates do.

After reading all the posts of problems I can't help thinking I've been lucky with my car which I've had for 3.5 years and 33000 miles

I like to rev it, it's been to the Pod and on track a couple of times. The worst thing wrong with it is the radio and central air-vents don't quite fit snugly, but no sign of the more serious engine or gearbox problems, touch wood.

All the cars are assembled in the UK, but I wonder if earlier cars had more Japanese parts and then manufacturing got moved to Europe. Perhaps it took EU suppliers a little while to get the QA sorted out? Either that or maybe it's a driving style thing?

Paul.

That's probably my biggest gripe about the car as a whole - that !Removed! poorly fitting dash above the radio!!! :ffs: It's in your face and you have to look at it everyday!

Hey you criticising my driving style!?!? I'm no driving Miss Daisy driver, but I don't do flat out starts off the mark etc... I put the shoe down but gradually build the speed up through the first few gears... I'm no road angel, but if I drive fast, it's on a clear open road - I don't like driving fast through unknown roads and the twisty bits unless it's somewhere I know like the back of my hand, so as you see, my car doesn't get abused.

Funnily enough, at the last service I had the dealer re-fit the radio as it seemed to be falling out, I was told that they may have had to keep the car a while if it was found that the dash was warped. A member of the service staff intimated that warped dashes are a known fault, cured by the fitting of a replacement.

Before they replace the dash top, what they do is remove the centre console (radio, vents etc) and trim off some of the inside of the dash top which makes it fit more snugly. This worked on mine.... for about 6 months, and now it's as bad as it ever was! :ffs:

Well I'd assume that there's a difference between the diesel and petrol mechanicals, but you never know!

Depends where you are I guess but the Bristol (Pioneer Park) is awesome for customer service. Just got mine back and I'm really pleased with it.

Got offered to extend my warranty. I'm quite tempted to actually. The fix I had done this week would have cost in excess of 800, plus the other fixes I've had which would come to about another few hundred. Makes me pleased I had the warranty in the first year. Although £400 is alot of cash.

my car has been back once, the gear change was rubbish, technician who was a plank said it was a characteristic! bull$$$$ so I ended up taking the car apart myself, I found the problem to be the mountings where the actual gear lever housing went onto the car. the OE ones are made of rubber

Swapped the housing over and problem gone. Replacement that came with my new one are metal and the gear changes is 100x better!

Got the car back today after a week with Jemca! They have offered me a free service for the balls up in not getting me my car back last Friday.

The clutch and gearchange now feel spot on; no gearbox whining, precise gear lever changing as opposed to notchy shifting, so all in all I'm happy with the work... for now :D

Gonna put the back box on this weekend weather permitting, now that I have the gasket required. Will hold off on the induction kit until I get my free service and then Dastek Unichip sorted! :D

The tell-tale signs on the gearbox were:

whining from gearbox on coasting along

rattle on engagement/dis-engagement of clutch

judder from clutch pedal (when changing down mostly)

vibration from front of car on motorway (not wheels!)

bottom of gearbox matted in oil/grease!!!! :o

My car came back from Mr T, and I was really pleased. However 3 days later some woman decided to use me to stop at a junction... crunch.... grr argh.... The latest estimate is 2K to fix and I'll stand to lose 4 years ncd if she won't admit fault. Also the rear brake seems to be binding and that wasn't included in the estimate so I need to get that added on.

Tesco's want me to use my local Renault garage to get it fixed. But i'm insisting on Mr T again, be nice to pay them for some work for once.

If any one has any tips on dealing with Tesco's regarding a claim, I'll be interested to hear.

Well would you believe it... on Saturday morning, whilst parked in a near-empty carpark near my job, some @rseh0le decided to somehow catch my rear bumper!! :censor: :ffs: :crybaby: Like, I always park my car AWAY from other cars and in spots least likely to incur parking dents etc... but still it happens! I know it's not £2k worth of damage, only a job for Dent Wizard or the like...

its !Removed! annoying. It was one of the few times where I was really happy with the state of the car. New brakes, air pump, master brake cynlinder all in the last 4 months. So i was beaming with joy on the thought of getting the complete drivers side replaced. I can't seem to upload the photos I have. I've linked them above.
