Help -> Gearbox Problem

I'm looking at a gen 6 GT right now (1996, 80,000 miles) for buying in the UK, and the only prob is that when the gearbox is cold, there is a bit of crunch going from 4th gear to 3rd (no other problems).

The owner has told me that when she is warmed up, it is totally unnoticeable, and it isn't really a prob. Only when the car is cold, you can hear a slight crunch. The seller seems to be honest about the car, and says when he bought it, it was warmed up and the gearbox seemed perfect.

I believe what the seller has said.. my only question is; in the long term, say two of three years down the line, is a full gearbox replacement on the cards? Will the problem get worse? Or, if handled with care, will the problem go away or just stay as it is?

I've searched through a couple of forums, and some guys used the following solution in Gen 5s:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KL09...motive&v=glance

Guys who used that stuff said the crunch went completely.

No idea sorry!! but there's loads of Celica GT's going cheap now , i would walk away from any with problems , generally these cars are solid . My gear box on a 94 GT is perfect , easy when hot or cold into any gear .

I've been looking a good while mate, and most are either overpriced and good, or else cheapo and dodgy.. this car is the best I've seen so far (best of both worlds, good price, honest seller(celica club lad) and looks great), bar the slight gearbox prob. And it's a very good deal for a 96. I actually don't care if I have to rpelace the gearbox eventually, cos the car is very nice, just passed MOT...

So would be really greatful if anyone knows how this gearbox prob would bear out in the long term?

I'm sorry but I've got to agree - there's loads of GT's out there - just be patient and wait for a nice one to come along with no problems.

Gearbox problems generally just get worse over time, it's never going to get better. If you do get it you could try some Molyslip to see if that reduces the problem, but at the end of the day you've got to budget for a replacement gearbox or to have yours fixed.

I a nice condition 96 GT should be fetching £2000, I'd say with a gearbox problem it would be worth £1300 if it's really nice maybe a top price of £1500

I a nice condition 96 GT should be fetching £2000,

Most out there (autotrader, eBay, etc.) seem to be more in the region of 3500 mate! Can't find any at the price you say?

I'm going to try and whittle it down to £1300 as you say, but the seller is asking for 2500

If it's the red on on celica club then it looks Ok, but I wouldn't give £2500 for it

Maybe I was slightly pesimistic - I just keep seeing the damn things go for stupidly low amounts! I know someone that just bought a really nice black GT for £1995 from a dealer (that was a 96 N)

GT4's have even come down a load recently and you can pick up a 96 for about 3.5k

If it's low enough miles etc then it might be worth it but try getting some gearbox quotes first, and bear it mind

I presume it's this one:

If it is that one I guess my target price would be £1500 but he realistically wouldn't let it got for less than £1750. Wait around a bit and see what other people think as that's just my opinion

Have you looked at this one:

Thanks for the help guys..

yeah I will try and get the price down a lot. If he doesn't want to drop it, then I will look around more. I just had probs finding a nice black one at a decent price.

Right now though, I see mr fil has his up for sale :D :D

Actually it wasn't that one sotal, it was a different one (in black), the guy just pm's me cos I had a wanted thread up.

Had same gearbox prob with mine and while molysip and changing gearbox oil helped, I think it needs a new box. So, yes it probably will get worse.

Got quotes from 247 spares for second hand ones for 150-250 quid. Not bad but dunno how much fitting would be. Also, they all had about 50-70K on them and were not reconditioned so you take a risk on the same thing happening with the new one.

Could be worth the hassle if you get the car you want at a good price.

Good Luck

I've decided to leave thar car - I've taken your advice guys. As you say, lots of better examples out there with no gearbox probs just as cheap!

In fact, SyCelicaGT from this very forum might be selling me his lovely white 96 GT with 100k. It's around £4000, but has loads of mods done (as you guys will know from the forum) and the car looks good condition + leather interior (very nice!)... so seriously considering his car, could be worth the extra £££ :)

A mate of mine had worn synchros and he had to replace the whole gearbox to sort it out. Is it possible just to sort out the synchros alone?

Yes it is entirely possible. However i suspect the cost would outweigh the advantages. If you were to get a garage to do the job, it would probably work out cheaper to buy a gauranteed recon box. Or, if your half handy with a set of spanners then you could of course attempt it yourself. In which case i`d be inclined to take up religion and pray you don`t lose any parts or forget how they go back together.

Once you`ve removed the box you then have to strip it down removing various bits n pieces along the way.

When you open the box up theres more parts to remove until your left with this.

You then have to strip each shaft down to replace the synchro rings. Perfectly do-able, but not for the faint hearted.

IMHO, if the problems not too severe i`d persevere with it until such time as the box is fubar, then i`d opt for either a gauranteed recon or low mileage replacement.
