the dizzy is nothing really .. it's a rotor arm, and then a cap with 4 contacts and a king lead connector ..

According to what the others said based on your test it is the magnetic pickup sensor that has gone, this I presume is in the distributer and is a sensor which senses the RPM. Maybe this picks the signal up from the crank and that's why they called it a crank sensor??

It looks like you've got three choices, go hand over loads of cash to a mechanic who will fix it, go to a scrappy and get a distributer and repalce it, or take it apart and give it a good clean and then reassemble it

No, the dizzy also has the angular position sensor inside it (i.e. the crank position sensor). It connects with a 4 pin connector, and provides signals G1, G2, and NE to the ECU. There is NO toothed wheel or position sensor on the crank on these cars, it's all done from the dizzy.

Looking at the EPC pictures, it appears that you can only buy the housing complete with the sensors.

mike B i could kiss you!

so if im getting fault code 12 whch points to the crank sensor, and your saying that this is in the dizzy, i should basically get a new distributor?

Well, if Booster has pulled up the correct EPC page, it looks like 19235 to me (thats not the full part number though). But I can see it being an expensive part, so you should really check yours out before you Shell out for a new one. It's very easy to check the resistances if you have a multimeter (or get a friend to do it). I am surprised that the components are not available separately. I'd be inclined to get a second hand replacement from TCB.

cheers iv been quoted 60 quid so far..obviously second hand

do you reckon that sounds a bit dodge? ie too cheap?

plus im assuming if i asked for the 3sge celica gt 94 distributor i cant be too far out?

cheers

best to spend 60 to find out its not the dizzy at fault, than spend 200 .IMHO

lol cheers guyz

i think im gonna take a gamble and buy the dizzy

if its that then im sorted (and if the crank is in here!!even toyota dont know whether it is or not!!)

if not il have to pay for another diagnostics and then some more for watever the problem is :crybaby:

but mikeb's kinda got me convinced plus the diagnostic carried out previously stated fault code 12 and points to crank sensor

sooooooooooooooo!

its unbelievable though how one single sensor can prevent my car from actually starting at times!!

The crank sensor tells the ECU what position in their cycle the crank and pistons are in. It needs this information to know when to fire the fuel injectors and ignition spark - without it, there is no way your engine will run. There are actually 3 sensors in the dizzy for this purpose - Ge1, Ge2, and Ne. It's all expained here (pages 5 and 13 are particularly useful for you):

http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h23.pdf

I still think it's worth sticking a multimeter in the connector and checking the resistances before you buy any replacement parts. It could just be a dodgy connector or wiring, or it might even be a faulty igniter (I think code 12 potentially covers this as well).

cheers mike;

if its a faulty igniter wat then?

Then replace the igniter unit. It's most likely to be the sensors in the dizzy though, don't worry about the igniter until you have eliminated the dizzy from the equation.

i hope it is the crank sensor, as that is what was specifically stated on the diagnoses sheet..and i can get hold of one for 60 quid, iv also negotiated to buy a second hand one which i can return and get 75% of the price back if i find it doesnt work

igniter unit sounds ever so expensive!

got my mechanic coming round tmrw and having a look
