hey

car went in for a service and MOT today, repair costs are £470 plus the servicing of £125 for a 2002 yaris t sport with 25k millage.

due to 2 new rear shock absorbers (1 is broken but they suggested to do both due to one being worn in and one new - this seem right?)

pads all round

rusted front disks which i recon are due to the previous owners not using it much(he said they have rusted but are recommended to be replaced if they get worse but im unsure if they should be done anyway as they have partly rusted???)

new tyre possibly worn due to the shock absorber going

and usual spark plugs etc etc

i can believe the absorber has gone - one in a million he said.

the MOT has not been done as it would fail as they cant get the parts today.

so not sure on the shock absorbers and the disks if they really need doing???

i bought the yaris as i thought it would be a problem free car, obviously not, doh. for the moment i am only getting the absorber(2 if necessary) and tyre due to costs.

£470 seems a bit excessive, try taking it to a independent garage to get these things done.

Some of these big garages try to pull a fast one cos is a bit quiet and they have sales targets to meet

To check you brakes look through your alloys to see if the braking surface is badly corroded, or when you

are braking from high speed are u experiencing any vibrations coming through the steering wheel. Also

have a feel of the edge of your brake disc to see if there is a excessive lip, if there is a excessive lip then

it means that the discs are getting a bit too thin.

As for your shocks they may leak, have a look at the rear to see if there is any oil leaking from the shock absorber. You can also press down on each rear corner to see if there is any difference? if one shock was leaking it may feel softer or easier to press down. If they do need doing it is normal to change them in pairs.

It may be worth taking your car into kwik fit for a second opinion but don't get it fixed at kwik fit.

Yeah I would say to get a second opinion.... seems a bit much to me, although dont take it to Kwik Fit, take it to a smaller independent garage or someone you trust or is recommended by friends or family for their advice.... I mean you'll have shelled out almost £600 before the MOT is done.... :o :wacko:

the garage is an independant and trusted garage, used it for a few years.

they took me round the car showing the problems. oil over the shock, worn tyre, rust on the break disks which are a little thinner on the edge than the middle.

the biggest reason for getting the car was i thought it was going to be reliable, unfortunately i have been unlucky and im not happy, but not a lot i can do. if only i could sell it but im not in the position to.

on top of this, the garage i went to offer a free MOT with the gold service, but the car cant be MOT'd due to it failing. so i will have to pay an extra £44 for an MOT at another garage as i cant get back to this one.

Sounds reasonable to me.

It's commonplace to repair in symmetry... definatley on brakes.

Front pads are usually £60 fitted, x2 to get the rears... front discs are about £120 for the pair fitted so that £240 already, then the shock will be about £120 fitted each, so that's £480, then a tyre at about £50 fitted, plus service of £125 plus MOT at £40 is a total of £695... so £600 is reasonable indeed.

You may just have to bite the bullet.

Shocks can go on any car... it's our dodgy roads!

the MOT and service is £125

i am just going to replace one shock and the tyre for the mo, ill do the pads soon, i wont do the disks. just too much money

Do both shocks on the same axel at the same time :thumbsup:

If one goes then the other isn’t far behind. Otherwise you will have to fork out twice instead of getting the job done once.

You’ve done 11,000 miles in the last 12 months, it’s a four year old car so I would expect that these items are classed as consumables/wear & tear and could happen on any vehicle.

Tyres and shocks don’t last forever, plus you don’t know how the other 14,000 miles prior to you having it was driven.

the garage recon that it went about 4 months ago, why would the other go if this one has? are they linked in some way? could have just been a nasty ditch or something i drove over to cause this, in which case the other side should be fine.

My 2002 SR has had 2 sets of shocks already, and I'm a careful driver. They are guaranteed for 3 years so I refused to pay when the second lot went because they were still under guarrantee. In my opinion there is a problem with the shocks on the early Yaris's. Mr T reckons it's all due to the speed bumps on Britain's roads. If that is the case then the shocks should be designed to go over them at 20 mph. Mine weren't.

Yaris's are the most reliable car on the road. Unfortunately I got the lemon. It's never out of the garage. Eg I've had my electric windows repaired 10 times in 4 years!

I had the same problem on my '02 SR regarding the shocks, luckily it was under warranty but did seem a bit stupid to me.

Just give it a good blat, and surface rust should disappear....
