Cam Belt Check?

Hi guys my first post here :D

I've just got myself a P reg 6th gen GT and would like to learn a little more before I go and blow it.

Allthough the car has lots of service history and reciepts I don't have any record of when or if the cam belt has been checked. The car has 104,000 miles on the clock and i'm reading threads around the net that they should be checked.<--maybe i should have had this done before purchasing the car but hey i just fell in love with it.

Can anyone give me more info on this area and possible cost to have the check carried out please?

Sometimes there's a sticker on the cam belt cover that shows the date and mileage of the last cam belt change. There's not really any way of 'checking' the condition of the belt, it should just be changed at the recommended service intervals. If in doubt, it might be worth getting it done with your next service.

I did same thing mate :( Got a bit carried away when I test drove it and didn't make sure the cambelt had been done. I've also got lots of receipts for everything else but the cambelt, so think I'll have to bite the bullet and get it done :!Removed!:

Oh... welcome to TOC

Cam belt costs £80 on an ST or GT at my local garage. I had mine done anyway when I got the car just to make sure. They have to be changed at x number of miles but also at x number of years whichever comes first - so it is more than likely that it will need changing

The engine should be a non-interference engine though so it shouldnt cause much damage but its more the inconvienience of breaking down

  • 3 weeks later...

I have just bought my first Celica (gen 6 GT) It is absolutely incredible and has a pretty rare kit and lovely black leather. Thing is it has 74000 miles and is 11 years old and I don't think the cambelt has been changed. Does anyone know when it should have been changed and any idea of cost including labour?

Cheers,

Ben

Hi and welcome to the club

If its not been done in 74k, get it done asap  should be done every 60k

Not too sure about pricing, but the cam-belt itself isnt too expensive, its labour that will bump it up

Welcome to TOC. Congratulations on your purchase.:thumbsup:

Belts should be changed at 60K . Good indy garage should be able to do it for around a £100 +/- The 3S-GE engine is reportedly a non interference engine so if the belt does let go it shouldn`t do any damage, But it would be a major PITA. Not to mention worrying in case your`s is the engine that decides to bend the rules (and valves)

Oh and get some pics up... We loves piccies.

There's a time interval as well, I think they should be changed every 5(??) years, regardless of mileage.

Cheers for the help guys, nice to know that there are always kind and knowledgable people to hand. As long as it doesn't cost more than about £200, I will be happy. There should be a thumbnail up by my name now but I will get some real pics in "my pride and joy" soon  .

Well I bought the original Toyota part from Mr T's minions cost £43. Toyota wanted just over £200 to fit it!! So I will shop around a bit. I don't suppose anyone can recommend a garage relatively near me. Off the subject a little but don't buy the crappy little plastic boot lining fastners from Toyota, cost me close to £5 each. My mistake but I will learn from it.
