Hi People

I lent my girlfriend my Celica today for the 1st time and while she was out in it the cambelt snapped :( . Its a 1991 st183 (i think) 2 ltr 16v twincam import with 4 wheel steering.

My question is will it have bent the valves ? she was doing approx 60mph at the point when the belt gave up the ghost. I dont no if these engines do bend the valves so am hopeing you guys can help !!!!!!!!!

I am praying they dont cos the car will have to go to the big heap in the sky if it has :crybaby:

i guess all you can do is have a belt fitted and find out. if it has it may work out cheaper locating a used cylinder head

Cheapest answer is to get a new cam belt fitted and then get a compression test done.

There is a high possibilty that there has been damage done to the valves or the pistons or both but you never know you luck....

Actually, there is quite a low possibility that the emgine is damaged - quite a few people now have suffered snapped cambelts without damage. The only way to tell for sure is to fit a new belt (~£40 for a genuine Toyota). If there is internal damage, you will probably find it easier to swap the whole engine than fit a new c/head.

Isnt the belt of celica's non-interference ? meaning if it does go it shouldnt do any major damage

I had a few gt coupe corollas and was told you can break a belt and get away with it as the engine hasa failsafe to stop the pistons slamming into the valves .I managed to prove this when i broke a belt in a 20v corolla i had i said it to my local garage about the fail safe he said never heard of it we took of the head valves pistons all perfect put in a new belt and away i went. (ill never be laxadasial about a tbelt again i had the belt in the boot for months very lucky man)
