Exhaust Gasket

Just a quick query: is there supposed to be a gasket between the back box and middle section on the Corolla T Sport or in fact any Corolla exhaust? It's the mushroom type ball joint. I ask because there was none on my standard exhaust when I removed it to install the TTE back box and I'm wondering if there should after reading through some old posts...

Perhaps european_bob can check in the parts catalogue?

When I stuck mine on the Toyota dealer said to use a bit of exhaust cement, I was dubious at first but phoned three dealers in my area and got the same response.

When I came to do the job the cement sealed it tight, and the two bolts pulled it together nicely just make sure it is aligned correctly. Other than that the only other thing I found useful was to oil the rubber mounts before putting back on - went on a treat!

You need a gasket for that place between the Backbox and the Midsection

you may get it cheaper at your local kwik fit - or parts supplier [ partco , brown bros, andrew page , unipart ] etc

Thanks for all your replies!

I didn't want to ring them up with such a little question so I thought I'd ask here first!

Well, anyway I rang last night and they are fitting it free of charge as I said I noticed it was missing when I put the TTE back box on and seeing as my car is almost back with them for a week getting the gearbox fixed, it's the least they can do! :D

That worries me now not having a gasket - I am concerned about the info given by the dealers in my area i.e. do they know what they're on about! Has anyone got a part number for the gasket as it may be worth while getting one just in case the exhaust starts to blow from that section - no point phoning up the dealer unless I have a part number cos they don't believe it needs a gasket!!! I must admit I always thought you needed one but it has sealed with the exhaust cement - downside I suppose is having to get rid of old cement before fitting a new section. Laying beside the car I can't hear a blow and can't feel one at the joint although the exhaust note is quite deep and therefore difficult to hear if there was a blow...nice sound though!

The reason there is a gasket I suppose is because it's a joint which can flex for movement of the exhaust. The cement probably does the job just as well because there won't be that much movement laterally...

If you have a ball and socket (mushroom) joint a gasket is not needed.

It works like a fluid pipe joint. Brake pipes have the same idea and don't use gaskets.
