I have an 89 GTi and have been having trouble with the wipers. Today the cup fell off the ball at the motor end. ok no problem I'll put it back on... Though before I do I'll take the lot out and see if there was a reason for this... So to cut a long story short.. I got wet in the rain but got it all out... NOW... Here's the problem on the bar there are 2 spindles for the wipers. When the unit is out of the car the right hand one can spin freely but the left doesn't... is this normal?? It looks like it hasn't in eons but they were working last week... Though it does look very rusty...

Anyone out there able to shed some lite on this for me please?????

Wiperdiagram.jpg

Rough diagram. The upper two pivots are the spindles which are fixed through the bodywork via a sleeve.

The inner grooved spindle which the wiper arm bolts onto should be fixed to the shorter arms that go to the

longer horizontal arm attached to the motor.

The sleeves should rotate freely around the spindles when not secured to the car.

Hope this helps.

Lots of help thanks. Although mine isn't in the rectangle shap more of three bars making a straight line it seems that it should move in the sleeve. Now to make the !Removed! thing work...lol..

What part of the Island are you?? I'm in Lake...

Loads of penetrating oil should free it up. I`m from the back of beyond then on a bit more sunny Chale Green. Yours is only the 3rd 162 i`ve seen over here. Someone on demoncars has one and i saw one in wootton the other day.

I've already covered it...lol... Yep I haven't seen many at all... Trouble with that is it makes it hard to get spares for it... Like the flex-pipe on the exhaust for the mot.. Still I'll find a way...lol

Try National Tyres at Shide for the flexi. They`ve helped me out with a few obscure parts before now. Also the guys down at Union Street garage in Newport can be quite useful. If they`re still there.:thumbsup:
