Has anyone tried running their D4D on Vegetable Oil?

I have been trawling cyberspace for someone who has tried biodiesel or vegetable oil in the Avensis D4D, but so far nothing.

I am a little reluctant to use 100% Biodiesel as my dealer informs me that it hasn't been tested in a Toyota. I find that really hard to believe. The D4D is a good engine and must be used, in various formsand countries, throughout the whole Toyota range.

I have tried vegetable oil though. Approximately a 60% derv/40% veg oil mix.

The car runs just the same.

Does anyone know, for certain, if veg oil will be detremental to my engine?

Reports do say that veg oil cleans the fuel lines, has better lubrication properties than derv, it has a higher cetane level so it burns better, its upto 80% better for the environment than derv and best of all ITS CHEAPER!!

Well, I'll keep mixin' it and let you know if I have any problems.

very,VERY interesting.

Only the highest of the development centres of the toyota corporation would know if this form of fuel would be bad for their diesel engines.

The one thing that is probably sure is that their engines will be designed to run on the fuel that we get at our pumps.

I would be surprised if your version of fuel didn't do something to the engine-----I would imagine that the ECU would be getting all sorts of strange signals from the various sensors.

Hey, keep us all informed. If it keeps on working with no problems, then we'll all be shortly using it.

Not Sure if you are still amember but I have! It runs OK with about 3 - 4 gallons to a fulltank of regular fuel any higher and you get starting problems. Not sure of long tem damage on fuel system. As the prive of veg oils is now 85pence /ltr its not worth doing anyway!

To adby123, With respect -WHY- No offence Meant I understand the merits of doing this, well some anyway price etc. But your vehicle is a high precision piece of machinery, particulary modern Diesel Injectors, High pressure Fuel Pumps etc etc. I could understand it if it had & old style DPA or In-Line injection pump. Modern injectors & Injection pumps( electronically controlled ) are like top quality swizz watches inside. Bio oil maybe, quite sure Toyota are looking into these things allready. But old chip fat no matter how it is refined I cannot see the point of it. If you drive a nice modern car you put nice modern fuel in it??????

Sorry. One other item, cleaner fuel lines. Diesel is a natural lubricant as your aware, cannot see how it would be outperformed by refined oils ( could except bio oil, but can by no means claim to be expert on this) from other means.

Ask your average Biker what they think of Diesel. Again no offence meant, just a slightly different outlook, what with being a 2 wheeler & a 4 wheeler.

Hi I run my D4D on bio diesel 100% but have only covered 35,000 miles and 10,000 of those were on B5 or upto 20% veg oil derv mix. I am still using bio diesel at 75p/litre.

Problems have been differing quality of fuels giving varied mpg returns but no engine problems other than harder to start when cold weather. minus2 to plus 5.

So far have found that the glow plugs from a cold engine stay on for 20 secs. so starting is fine from 5 secs after the light goes out.

Also that heater plugs go out after 3 secs if the engine has reached normal temps then allowed to cool even with the gauge in cold.

Seems the gauge needs to be cold for 1 hour before full glow plug power is resumed.

Also that on cranking the glow plugs always come on.

Some veg oil users report hard starting dependant on mix and temperature, be aware that at higher mixes hard starting is due to none burnt fuel running down into the bores gumming up the rings and thickening the engine oil. so monitor the engine oil level real close. test your veg oil in your freezer.

I think your better of converting your veg oil to bio diesel and running on that methanol costs 15p/litre if your used veg oil is free its cheap motoring. Or buying it ready made find close by bio producers and talk to them. Or fitting a second tank starting on diesel or bio then switching to the veg oil tank when hot. Injector temperature needs to be more than 40degrees C. Valves are available from £35.
