Avensis Cabin Filters

Hi, has anyone had any problems getting the cabin filters for a 2000 avensis. I tried to buy some the other day, and my local toyota dealer didn't have them in stock. I went to a motor factors, who had some, but when i tried to fit them, they were like a mirror image of the ones i took out, with the grooves on the edges, on the opposite sides, and wouldn't go in. I took them back, and they said that was the only part numbers they had for that model. Has anyone had the same problem, or know anything obout it. Thanks.

I tried to get one for my 03 Avensis this week but no partshop could get hold of one. Ended up going to Mr T who wanted £24 :crybaby: for what is basically a consortinered bit of paper.

MR T wanted £ 42.00 for mine because there is two of them. The factors were £23.00 but they didn't fit

Gotta say that the air con is better since I changed it, the old one was black and full of crap.

I have a 2000 1.8 SE but don't have an owners manual. Ther's no HAYNES manual yet either. Exactly where are these filters?

My car was in a really grubby state when I got it and the filters will no doubt be black by now!!

The owners manual you need was on eBay for about a £5.00 last weel, just had a look for it but it's gone. I'll keep an eye out for it if it reappears.

The filters are in the footwell on the drivers side. They are in the centre below the heater. You have to take out some clips from the carpet and peel it back. You will see a long thin flap, which you remove. Then you will see the filters. They have a little lug on them to grab and slide out. When you have taken out the bottom one, the other one is above it. You have to pull it down to take it out. It is quite difficult to see, but if you get in the footwell, and use a torch, you can do it. The manual tells you they are in the footwell, but shows them in the door pillar. Hope that helps. Cheers

Thanks Pete and Jo;

I think that Mr T can get me a manual for about £7/8 for mine which would be (slightly)different to that one (I think as that is for a 1997 onwards - whatever that means??).

A Local motor factor claims to be able to get a filter for £23 and thats about the same price as the original from the dealer.

Edit:

The local dealer want £48 for the two part filter!! No way!!

The existing filters are a bit grubby but I've vac'd them out and sloshed them around in a basin of warm water with washing machine liquid. That will do I think!!

But isn't it made of paper? I don't think it's washable.

Mr T used to charge the cabin filter for the 2002 MY Avensis 60 Euros. I changed it this year and he charged 30 Euros. I use a vacumn cleaner to clean the dust from time to time but still it is incredible how quickly it changes from white to black.

No it's not paper - it's a fine 'mesh' like membrane which is quite transparent when held to the light. The filter is now dried out and doesn't appear to have suffered any effects from the wash. I was careful to thoroughly vacuum it before I started.

I figured that anything that was trapped in it would be soluable in warm water and detergent. If I wasn't satisfied with the results I could always have bought a replacement, so there really wasn't any risk. The water in the sink went quite dark. The filter is still a shade of grey but I estimate that it's going to be about 80%+ efficient compared to a new one!
