Hi all, I'm new to Corolla ownership, and this forum. It seems to be a really usefull source of info!

Can anyone else with a 1.4 vvt-i E12 that whines at about 2000 rpm no matter what gear?

I can't figure out if it is gearbox or engine. Anyone else experienced it?

TIA

Press the clutch.

With clutch pressed in (i.e. transmission disconnected from the engine) if the noise is still there it's engine. If it goes away it's transmission

Inlet manifolds are common for vibrating at that engine speed. It sounds like an annoying rattle at approx 2k rpm. Once replaced, noise should go away but dont buy a second hand one cos u probably be replacing bad with bad. Dunno if anyone else has had this problem with VVTi Corolla inlet manifold rattles.

Hi thanks for the replies. Been busy with work. Now, back to the issue...

I tried putting the clutch in as suggested and the noise remains, so I guess that points to the transmission. It seems like a whine, rather than a rattle or resonance in the exhaust. It may just be normal?

I'm having a few gripes with my "reliable" Toyota:

Apart from drivers door moulding falling off, the whine, drivers door speaker not working, rear de-mister not working (needs new back window to fix aparently), and today i noticed the rear brake on the passenger side appears not to be working (disk has surface rust, as opposed to all others being normal and 'shiny').

I think I'm going to have to drop it off for a day or two at my local dealer, and test my extended warranty...

Seems like a lot of issues for a 3-ish year old, 29k mile car with FSH?

It has already had the brake pads and ABS sensors changed before I picked it up.

Have I just got myself a complete pig? Or was I expecting too much from Toyota? I 'traded up' from a Ford as I was looking for a reliable car!

Hi

I work at a Toyota dealer & the faults u talk about (ABS sensors, back window, speaker etc) are certianly not common... sounds like u have just been unlucky!?

I would sugest the vibration may be clutch fault, we replace quite a few for this complaint.

Cheers...

Avensis_gs_auto - thanks for the info.

I don't want to become the guy the service desk thinks "god not him again" when I walk in, but would like to get the niggles sorted.

I'm begining to think the one carefull owner wasn't that carefull, especially as I now know it was a motability car, and so the previous keeper would have known that they'd get a new one at the end of the 3 years.

The back window de-mister was broken when they peeled the previous dealers sticker off the back window, so isn't an inherent fault in fairness to Toyota. I thought they might have been able to fix it with conductive pen or something, but apparently it needs a new back window.

The front door speaker is just irritating more than anything.

But the mechanicals I'm keen to get fixed.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty things I do like - e.g. the consistant 44-45mpg, the nippiness and the supremely comfy drivers seat.

  • 1 month later...

Thought I'd add to the thread that I had a mechanic in the car with me this morning and the whine has been initially diagnosed as induction noise. The car is in getting other stuff done, and he's going to have a check.

I always thought of induction as more of a roar / rumble than a whine.

Ah well. Another issue put to bed hopefully

Hi yeah, it was manufactured in the UK in 2002, registered Jan 03 on a 52 plate.
