Timing Belt

:help: I am trying to fit a new timing belt on my toyota hi-lux 2.4d 1996 model the problem i have is that i can not undo the bolt that holds the pully wheel to the crank which i have to take off to get the timing cover off.Is there a way to lock off the crank so there is no play when i undo the bolt as i have tried to hold the crank by using a set of stilsons on the driveshaft and putting in gear to hold the crank. I was told if the bolt was very tight that by using a solid bar and holding it to the ground and then turn the engine over it would undo the bolt but i think this might cause damage to the engine so have not tried .

I would be gratfull if anyone could help me on this as no one seems to know. I have tried to get a manual on this but haynes do not do one. Any help much appreciated

chances are its lock tighted in . you will need a windy hammer gun to remove it.

GT4 BOOSTER THANKS FOR REPLY . Have tried a electric hammer on it but did not budge. Don't have air hammer and is very tight to get one in as it catches the frame so can only use a small hammer.

Any other suggestions of you or anybody would be appreciated.

Are you using a spanner or socket to undo the bolt?

For starters, put the truck in reverse and in 4WD...... it may help.... it may not....

Now if your using a spanner, make sure it's an closed one end and open the other. This means you can put another spanner (ring) over the open end of the first to give you more leverage.

If your using a socket, use a longer bar.... atleast 2ft in length.....

SELFBUILD THANKS FOR REPLY. I am using a long bar with socket also tried in reverse gear with stilsons around shaft but stilsons did not hold just slipped around shaft. Iwas told to use some heat on it but i think this might ruin the crank seal. Done a lot of timing belts on other vehicles but never hade one this tight before. Think i might be beaten and have to take it to toyota and spend a couple of hundred quid just to undo a bolt :crybaby: Not unless somebody wants to come to north shropshire and show off there skills and earn twenty quid? Any offers out there. :)

I know its probably obvious but have you tried tightening it up a bit first? This some times makes it a bit easier.

If you are carefull with heat the seals should be ok, after all they live in an engine thats always very hot whilst its running.

Finally I'd leave some plus-gas penetrating oil in there to try and help release the bolt.

The way I've done Toyota timing belts is like this.

Stopping the pulley wheel from turning is always the main problem!!

The pulley wheels have (at least) two holes drilled in which are about 180degs apart. You need 2 bolts which are roughly the diameter but longer than the depth of the holes.

You need two lengths of metal bar about 1" wide and about 18" long. In each bar drill one hole about an inch from the end but slightly off-set. Through each hole put a bolt through and secure them with suitable nuts. The remaining length of bolt should then be placed into the holes in the pulley-wheel.

Arrange the two bars so that they can cross each other (roughly like an isosolese triange if you can picture this)and at the same time still give access to the pulley wheel nut. Mark the two bars so that holes can be drilled through so that they can be bolted together at the opposite end to the pulley wheel.

This arrangement can be used so that the bars act as a brace against the ground/driveshaft/suspension. It stops the pulley wheel turning when the bolt is undone.

I have used this successfully 5-6 times on various Toyotas and it has never let me down.

Thanks to BenDTWR and gazza1286 for your suggestions. Tried alittle heat but no joy and the pully wheele has no holes to make a locking bar so have admitted defeat and sent it to toyota.
