Front Brake Issue

hi every one,

I've been a regular reader but never posted before :) .

The thing I had to take my 1.0 ltr 03 Yaris to Mr.T for the third year service, they called me back and I was told that I need to change my brake pads and it would cost £200, well I think thats too much for changing brake pads.

so I told'em to forget about the brakes, so I bought a genuine Toyota brakes for £35 and took it to my local garage and he fixed them for £20.

this is my first change since it was brand new, the brakes used to be very response and sharp, but the guy who fitted the new ones told me to take it easy for the first 200 miles. Now I can see why the are not very sharp any more and feels weaker.

is that normal or not, do I need to take it back or should I take it to Mr.T.

If thats not normal then thats gona be a pain in the ***** cause I wanted to avoid the £200 in the first place.

sorry for the long post

Cheers.

you could also need new discs, but if you haven't worn tha brake pads in yet (done more than 200 miles) since they were fitted it could take a while longer for them to ajust.

also you have to be careful when braking as the heat build up can cause the pads to glaze, which causes the brakes not to perform as well as they can.

but £200 just for the pads and changing them, you can get aftermarket discs and pads for thet price which will increase the brakes performance a hell of a lot.

they'll probably need to bed in a bit longer give them a while longer and see how they go.

did they bleed the brakes when u had the pads fitted? if not id suggest trying that. Are the brakes fairly responsive or does the peddle push down fair bit before much happens

200 is well over priced i had discs and pads changed for 240, go to a local place they will be able to get the parts in and often do it a lot cheaper.

i agree its normal as it takes a while for ur new pads to bed in

u can speed up the process by doing some controlled braking on a quiet road or find a road that has lots

of speed bumps (forcing u to brake)

@ armoredfist2002;

I was told that my Discs are still good, and I only changed them just yesterday and I've done only 25 miles since then.

cheers

@ Chuck04;

no they did not bleed the brakes.

They are not responsive like usual but yeah peddle push down fair bit to stop the car from 38m/h and feels weak, if I press more the ABS kicks in which is not like usual.

cheers

@ willya;

I will try your suggestion

cheers

I'm relived a bit to know that this is normal but if I've done it with Mr.T would this happened or not.

New pads need bedding in for first few hundred miles... their performance won't be near as good until they are bedded in.

Brake fluid should have been changed at 2yr service so shouldn't need bleeding just yet... maybe the pedal travel needs adjusting, but I doubt it. It's just the new pads... they'll be fine in a few hundred miles, just take it easy for now.

Thank you for all your replies, it really comforted me :)

I will do as you say

Cheers.

Whenever I change brake pads, I clamp off the flexi-hose and loosen the bleed nipple then push the piston back. I always get a good pedal afterwards as opposed to forcing the fluid back to the master cylinder reservoir. I heard that it can 'fold' the one way seals in the master cylinder over as the fluid doesn't travel back in this direction and always away from the reservoir.

If I were you I'd take it easy for a few more miles AND get the brakes bled - it could just be that the local place has allowed air to get into the system.

Last year for my second service Mr.T told me that I need to bleed the system and replace the brake fluid and they charged me £285 Including the 2nd year full service.

so you are saying I need to do it again, :ffs: the local garage, I think if I paid the £200 to Mr.T in the first place would've been better :crybaby: .

If its not been clamped during the pad swap you might well need to bleed them - but I know this shouldnt cost more than say 25quid and take more than 20mins for any decent mechanic.

Hi T Spirit,

I changed the pads on my Yaris last week.

Easy job cost £35 for pads from Toyota.

Yes they do need bedding in as they don't immediately feel the same.

After a couple of hundred miles you won't feel the difference.

No need to bleed if you had fluid changed last year.

Last month Toyota changed pads on my Yaris Verso.

Cost £35 for parts plus £40 labour.

You need to check your prices from your Toyota. They are wrong.

Thanks for the info, I feel I was conned by Mr. T, it does not matter now because **** happens, next time I'll be asking them about thier prices :(

anyway my brakes still new and I havent driven it a single mile because its been at Mr.T fixing a dent on the drivers door caused by them while it was for full service (for free ofcourse :) ). its been three days now since they had my car. I cant wait to sort out this issue its been a bad week 4 me.

no need to bleed the brakes whatso ever, all that it is, are the new pads bedding into the old discs

the only time the brakes woyld need bleeding is if the system has been opened to atmosphere...which they havnt
