I've got a 1.4, although it is a 2005 model. ( It's my 6th corolla and apart from my 1988 model the best built one ! ).

The performance will not be as good as a 1.6, but it can be it is still very good ! £200 extra for insurance sounds a lot, but that depends on your age and driving record. I am only paying £160 for my insurance, with guaranteed NCD. :(

I think there are more 1.6's around, but I believe the earlier ones have some oil problems !

I take it that you are also thinking of a Paseo ! ( if I were younger that is what I would go for ).

Not an easy decision to make, but both are more substantial than a Fiesta.

Best of luck with which ever choice you make.

Paseo/yaris T Sport/Corolla 1.4/Rav4(maybe)/Aygo(free insurance deal only) are the only ones im looking at as they the only affordable toyota's i like  .

im 21 been driving 3 years have 0ncb n 3 points and the corolla 1.4 is just few quid cheaper to insure than the paseo ;) and about £20 more than my fez (£994-1060FC region) and both the TS/Rolla 1.6 are in the £1100-1200FC region  .

i hear the 1.4's are good, but how good? :) . my fez is alittle underpowered because the cars too heavy so the performance isnt great, but dont want another car with the same sorta feeling and hoping the rolla isnt like that ;)

Mine isn't what I call sporty, but it is nippy. 95bhp means it is just 4 down on a 1.6 Focus, but I like the power delivery better (and the change in exhaust note). It is a quiet and comfy car for long journeys, and I get 43-45mpg in normal driving. I'm only on my 3rd tank of petrol since I got it, but I hope this continues...

I've previoulsy had a Fester too, mine was only a 1.1 tho. What size of engine is yours?

I like the Rolla better than my recent 306 D Turbo, it is much more driveable with a powerband that far exceeds the 306s 800rev one, but the delivery is less frantic (though i've never been past 4000rpm in my Rolla, so maybe I'm missing the best bit - red line is 6500).

For my needs it was a good compromise car. Cheap to run (not sure about servicing tho), cheap to insure, comfy for all 6'3" of me, quite pretty and no sloth.

Yaris TS mate ..... quality car, very nippy, and looks sporty too  !

Plenty of mods out there

The only negative thing is that the boot is tiny - but your 21 and I asume that you don't have kids yet ;) !

Book yourself a test drive and you will love it ..... I loved my yaris SR

If your 21, you could get insured on a Celica GT4 :D

Out of the cars you listed, i'd say go for the Yaris TS ;)

my fez is a 1.25 16v 2003 model  , ill post a pic or atleast put it under my name so you can mock it :P .

boot size dont bother me as ive only done shopping atleast once or twice in my life time when parents been on holiday  , but aslong as a 10/12" sub n a amp can fit then thats all that matters ;) , tho probly wanna listen to the sporty exhaust more B) .

as for celica's, even the 1.8 ST isnt cheap, no less than 1600 FC :( , i think a mk2 mr2 158bhp version is cheaper, but not by much and at 2k FC i could insure a 1994 supra TT, but not gonna :P and also for around 1300 FC i could get a starlet turbo, but dont know if i should  .

the thing is my points are for defected tyres which ive been told is worse than speeding so my points would cost me more :( .

im 6ft2 so getting comfy in the cars ive mentioned shouldnt be a problem, especially if ithey roomy like my fez :) .

last thing, are replacement parts for the TS quite pricey being a sports model?.

what about a corolla t sport or would they chop off your legs for the insurance ? take one for a test drive and watch what happens when you rev above 6300  . you may then put it on your list if not possible then the yaris t sport would be my choice.

2k FC just like the supra and youd know what the choice would be :P .

the performance figures dont seem impressive compared to the competitions :( especially ones cheaper to buy  . no dout nice cars(looks the !Removed! too B) ), but reading peoples reviews(parkers) you have to drive above 6000rpm for the performance and between 3000-6000 is abit lacking and many people mentioned about that, so it does change opinions ;) , but if the insurance was as cheap as an audi A3 TSport then id consider it more so regardless  .

looks like the Yaris TS would be the better choice then, so may just go check one out :D

Really you get what you pay for. I'm sure you would be happy with a Yaris T Sport as it is a good car, but performance-wise it is a long way behind the Corolla.

You might look at the 0-60 times of about 9sec for the Yaris and 8.4sec for the Corolla and think that you didn't get much more for your money if you went for a Corolla. However, the figures are wrong as the CTS is much quicker than that to 60.

Yaris 105bhp, Corolla 190bhp, and only 0.6 sec difference 0-60? Something's not right there :D

Also, the Yaris takes over half a minute to get to 100mph, whereas the CTS can do it comfortably under 20sec.

I still say the Yaris is a good car and definitely worth considering, but you get more bang for your buck with the Corolla.

Paul.

As an aside I couldn't fit in the '05 Fiesta. Plenty of room lengthwise, but no-where for my left leg to go when not on the clutch. I have a handy footrest on the Rolla, and my knee doesn't stop me going into 5th...

I'd like a more sporty car, but I'm only £160 to insure the 1.4 vvt-i (28 this year, 3 points SP50, fully comp, protected NCD).

My sister has a Yaris, for me just not enough room. The back seats aren't really practical if you want to use the boot and carry an adult.

My mate has an MR2 with the 1.8 VVTL-i and I'd love anything with that engine...

Horses for courses, and you just need to prioritise speed / size / costs.

Good luck :P

yeah no foot rest in the fiesta's :( , the only time i complain about space is if i have passengers and i need to move my seat forward  .

i rarely have passengers now as i dont go out as often as i use to , so doesnt bother me and if i had a car like the paseo i wouldnt have back seats for long anyway  .

the yaris TS is much quicker than my fez and i will notice it, just wanted to see if they are actually as good as people say  .

im not douting the Rolla TS as a good performer, im just going by what ive read  and like i said if it was affordable then id get one :) .

I've got a 2005 Corolla 1.4 VVT-i/97 h.p./ and i'm verry happy with that car.-Nippy engine,even in low Rpm,quiet also,very good mpg.-- 8.3/100km. european measure.Very good car,comfy seats,comfy suspension,great on the motorway and verry good acceleration,no comparison with those sluggish 1.4 Golf 5,Focus,307 e.t.c..,but i think air-conditioning isn't very good,not too freezy and tomorrow i'm going to Toyota garage for maintenance.

As a young person I can see what your problem is !!

There are several good toyota models out there, but which one to choose ? :o

There are a lot of corollas, yarii, etc, but very few Paseo's. Because they are quite rare they tend to hold their price very well. There is one advertised in this area ( South devon ) , they are asking £2,795 for it, on an 'R' plate, but it has only done 58k.

Don't forget that the older the car the more chance of rust and it's reliability will probably not as good.

I'm afraid that like everything else in life, you pay your money and take your chance, best of luck, but whatever you get I hope you enjoy it !!! :)

I had a 2001 corolla 1.4 GLS, picked up well in gear and when being worked. Mpg 33-37 round town on a run 45ish . Has mentioned there are oil issues with 1.4 1.6 1.8 vvt-i's made from 2000-2002 my old corolla was one of them all was fine till i got over 25k and started to use a bit of oil come 40k i was getting on for a couple of liters per month. Reached 47k ish was using a sump per month then my dealer decided there was somthing up with it. Apart from that the car was sound. There is also a few problems with gearbox bearings tends to happen around 50k ish.
