Changing from 3rd to 4th today when I heard a pop, looked down and the rubbish flimsy plastic stock gear lever gaiter has come away

To make things worse when I got home and took it off completely I broke the plastic piece which clips onto the base.

Anyone got any ideas now ?

wheres the brocken clip? However if AygoUgo gets the gaitor order made up you could buy a nice leather one :)

At the bottom of the gaiter sleeve there is a plastic rim the same shape as the housing and the gaiter is stapled to it.

The plastic rim has lugs on it which clip into the slots you see on the base section in my pic.

However I have broken the plastic rim so it's now flexible and no longer shaped like the base it sits / clips on.

I don’t want to p1$$ on you picnic but it is a cheap car and at budget prices. I would expect things to fall off, but not this early.

Take it back to Mr T, tell them what happened and whisper "warranty" softly into their ears.

And stop trying to power shift!

Yeah I know - I'm not really worried about it breaking - some parts are v cheap - I'm sure the door handle pulls won't last long either

It's just getting a new gaiter thats a pain - Aygo is new so there don't seem to be any off the shelf stuff available and I don't really know where to begin with getting the new plastic base bit.

Mr T tomorrow - lets see what happens !

And stop trying to power shift!

You do know this is in the Aygo don't you :D :D

Yes, that's why I said trying. :P

I've sent mine away last week and I'm just waiting on word. Will get you info asap. As the bottom bit is a complete ring I would expect it to be flimsy. I broke one clip but that didn't really affect it at all. Is the ring broken as well as the clips ?

Right Mr T has one FOC on order for me  They did try to wriggle claiming that as I had changed the gear knob I had fitted after market parts and voided the warranty but when I explained that it was a Corolla knob and fitted by the supplying dealer they gave in.

All in all a result but I still want a leather custom jobbie.

Got the new gaiter yesterday - no charge, fitted for me, nice coffee whilst I waited, sweets for the kids - well done Andrew Rowley Toyota, Watford

Hi All,

I finally got around to sending off my original gaitor to get a custom one made. So here is the new one installed with the MOMO Duke gear knob and gaitor ring. The leather is nice and soft, if a little on the thin side (but any thicker and it wouldn't fit into the ring). We got red stiching as it's a red Aygo and plan a leather interior with red stitching (much much) later.

If you want a new gaitor then it's £15 inc P+P from this eBay seller who were very friendly and helpfull.

Here's the pics:

Overall I paid, £50 for the gear knob, £7 for the ring and £15 for the gaitor that uses the original base so it clips straight in like the original (you make have to cut slits for the clips on the base but thats about it as it's elasticated).

So what do ya think ?

Just in case you are wondering what the little screen at the top of the dash and controller in front of the gear lever are then it's a Harman Kardon Drive and Play that integrates with the iPod - like this much better than the simple cable attachment and means the ipod is hidden away. For more info see: http://www.harmankardon.com/drive-1/default.aspx

Next it's the sounds and I've already installed one part, bought another and I'm sourcing the others this weekend.

Looking good.

Is that a Pug glove box lid ? Whats it like I remember someone saying they had one and it was a bit of a poor fit and not great quality.

gaiter looks too large. and the gear knob looks out of place. Sorry but my personal thoughts this time are negative.

Yup, it is a Pug glove box lid - I'd say it's the same quality as the rest of the interior - pretty cheap - if you flex the "hinge" before fitting then it works better and settle quicker. If you don't flex the hinge it doesn't want to fit as well but "gives in" after a day or so as it's held in place by the latch.

BadBoy, that's your opnion and I respect that. What I didn't explain is I got it made to my custom size as I prefer them to be a bit on the large side. As for the gear knob looking out of place ??? Don't understand how a black and satin silver MOMO gear knob looks out of place in a black/grey & silver interior with a MOMO theme  ??? It's maybe just the photo as it doesn't show the silver part of the gear knob too well.

The people who made my gaitor have my old one and can make one to the standard size if you want one or if you want a specific colour, stitching, size just email them as they are helpful.

When I get enough dough im going to do my interior all at the same time. Complete with xbox 360, a pair of sunvisor screens, change Speakers, pedals, gaitor, gearknob, tachometer and a new sub speaker and custom box (thinking about one that slants upwards towards the boot maybe 12"). But before I do that I want new wheels, lowering springs and slightly tinted windows. Bodykit can come at a time much later.

i like the gaitor and glove box, personally i prefer the less spherical gear knobs but i think yours looks much nicer than the standard one...

did you change the pedals for the look or does it improve driving? your gas pedal looks like its set much higher than mine!

Yeh there's lots of gear knobs out there for all tastes so get what you like and feels works best for you.

I got ours from Momo Gear Knobs and the mating ring from Momo gear ring. The ring will fit to any gear knob with the same threading as a momo and comes in black, silver or chrome. I think it makes the gear knob and gaitor look much more factory fit. Also the pics make the gear gaitor look a little big but in fact when the gear lever is moved into a gear it has just the right amount of slack.

The pedal covers were also added and had to be positioned to account for the pedal arms on the back of each pedal face. The accelerator cover has been moved a bit to the left and brake cover a bit to the right so now I can "heel and toe" much better. The clutch one was lowered slightly too as the pedal sits very high and makes smooth clutch use a bit more awkward - easier now it has the Momo covers on and I adjusted the clutch so it didn't raise up so high too.

So overall between the new gear knob and the pedal covers gear changing is much quicker and smoother. :D

how did you go about adjusting the clutch to make it sit slightly lower?

Just look up under the dash past the top of the clutch arm and you should see a white braket that has a bolt with a locking screw. Loosen the locking bolt fully then tightened the bolt fully - it makes the pedal go down a little but only by about 10mm - you do notice it when you start using the clutch, Would be better if it went even lower but then that would start depressing the clutch itself so you would end up running the car without the clutch being fully engaged - not good !

about the warranty be careful they don't like to give things away for free but you only loose it if you change parts in the engine or in the transmission that aren't original from toyota and this means that you can go to another car shop to fix your car but if you put original parts from toyota they can't say nothing at least in portugal it's like this
