I've just bought my first Toyota,a 1997 ST 1.8 with sports suspension pack and 17inch alloys with new Yokohamas, my question is; what engine do I have(there's a GT Badge on the tailgate) the engines just been rebuilt by a Toyota mechanic and I was told it had been chipped.

If it's a 1.8ST then it ISN'T A GT!!

Have a look under the bonnet - they stamp the engine code in big letters. The 1.8 is a 7A-FE. The GT is a 2.0litre 3S-GE or if it's an import it could be a 3S-FE or a Red Top Beams (doubtful)

You should really know though as you wouldn't be able to get insurance without knowing!

It sounds like it's a 1.8 7A-FE that's had an accident and had some of the body parts replaced with GT parts?? As far as I know the chips are pretty useless on the 1.8
