Whats That Noise?

I wonder if anyone has any ideas what the noise in my 05 T-Sport might be?

With the radio turned off (the noise is not very loud), I have what I can only describe as a faint whine, which increases in pitch as the revs rise.

I thought it might be engine electrics intefering with the radio, but it doesn't appear to be coming from the Speakers, and the noise is there even with the stereo off. Perhaps it is some sort of induction noise ... ?

Anyway, your comments would be appreciated!

Apart from the noise, the car is cracking! Just over 500 miles recorded now, and the engine and gearbox have loosened up noticeably. Taking it to South France next week, so that should finish the running in period

~3000 / 3500 RPM on a motorway in 5th, if I accelerate I get a high pitched whhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiineeee

I think it goes up in pitch (been a while since I have heard it, not done any motorway for some weeks) - only happens from around 3000rpm, usually when accelerating from the slow / middle lane and being lame, leaving it in 5th

Have to say its not that much of a faint noise in mine, you can quite easily hear it but tbh I've had this similiar noise in other cars, nothing to worry about (says I, optimistically... )

I'm from Essex too, which part are you in?

Welcome to TOC - I regularly take my 54 Plate Yaris to Belgium now, such an easy car to drive!

Well, one day after I replied I did some motorway :D

It definately increases in pitch a bit, and starts loudly-ish @ 3000rpm either in 4th or 5th in mine, and by 3500rpm its completely gone, really.

Personally I dont think its anything to worry about, and is just alternator whine or something because the Yaris T-Sport doesn't have that much in the way of sound proofing  -which is good, because sound proofing is heavy :P

It is odd how it doesn't happen in 1st,2nd,3rd etc but only at motorway speeds in 4th or 5th.

Hope this helps, KevTheRev :)

i get the same thing but slightly different, the sound goes up when i accelerate. it comes from the left front tweeter and goes completely off when i turn the stereo off.

it tends to come and go, i have an aftermarket head unit and Speakers so i assume its a loose connection, however it is very annoying at times and something i cant just ignore.

I have one of those cheapo eBay charge stabilizer thingy's, they reduce background noise.

Well, I'm back from France ... car is well run in now, me thinks! The whine has vanished, and the exhaust note has deepened. Had fun on the toll roads ... discovered top speed is an indictated 130mph - bounces off the rev limiter in 5th at that speed. Got slaughtered by a TVR Cerbera (of course) that was heading for Le Mans. Avereaged 42mpg for a 2k mile round trip - impressive!

Thanks for all your replies. Anyone know if I can fit a supercharger or turbo to the car without invalidating the warranty? What about if I buy a TTE supercharger and get the dealer to fit ... ? Lemme know!

PS: Blue84 - I'm in Chelmsford. Where are you? Wanna meet?
