Tatty Wheels Replacements

I have a very low mileage '99 3 door (why oh why are they going to discontinue these?) in red which is going to have its paintwork tarted up but the wheels are rather tatty looking (not alloys) and I fear that the wheels are going to look even worse after the paint job. The chap said he can paint them but the nice new effect will only last for a year and then they will have to be redone.

Can one buy alloys that won't look silly and that won't also cost the earth please, or should I just stick with what I've got.

Incidentally I used to have a Corolla GTI with alloys and they were very difficult to remove when changing a wheel.
