Automatic Values

Hi all

I've currently got a 2002 Avensis 1.8 vvti manual but am looking at changing to either an Avensis or Corolla automatic (most of my driving seems to be around the city nowadays so it makes more sense). I've never owned an auto before (although I have driven several) so have no idea how well they hold their value. However, when I look at the local Toyota dealers the second-hand autos that are for sale seem to command a premium (or is it my imagination?!)

As the Avensis is a 'fleet' car as well as a family car, there are shed loads of T3 variants. Autos are more rare, so I guess it's a simple case of supply and demand. Perhaps £600-800 more, which is roughly the cost of the auto box new anyway?

Auto's always hold onto their value more than manuals. It was the number 1 option for getting your money back at resale time, number 2 was air-conditioning and 3rd was full-map sat-nav.

As an example, 8 months ago I got £3700 in part-ex for my 98 2.0 Avensis auto, which I thought was pretty good for such an old car when I see many manual versions going for no more than £2500.

Also in the real world they tend to be no more thirsty than a manual, i've had two and my dad's had them for years.
