How To Tell Differences Between 4age's

Anyone?

All I want to know is there a model number on the block or any other features or any physical signs that will let me know :thumbsup:

Knowlson, From what I've been able to find there is very little difference externally. You would have to take it apart to look at some of the internals - and even then I think it depnds on whether or not it's an early or late version. Sorry can't be of more help - most of what I know has come from club 4age

ahhh such a good point and one I will take notice of :thumbsup:

Well I might as well start fitting some of the new stuff I have :lol: Even though the TRD shocks I have are really good at keeping the shed door open :lol:

Okay, young padawan learner. When you refer to your engine, use the visible mechanical differences to describe your particular 4A-GE. For example, over the 4A-GE's lifespan, there are external differences on the block that you can readily see. Some variants have a noticeable plate that's sandwiched in between the head and the intake manifold (the T-VIS system along with a "name tag" affixed to the top of the manifold log). Some used either a MAP or AFM sensor to read the engine load (the amount of air getting into the engine)--but, we'll skip this characteristic because there are some 4A-GE's out there that have used MAP and AFM during the same time period depending on the market. Others had an external oil drain at the intake side of the head/block. Still, other differences aren't readily apparent unless the engine's disassembled. Read on and become enlightened. =)

83-86 3 rib block

87-89 7 rib block,

providing they havn't been re-painted, the cam covers on the early (3 rib block) 4AGE was a silvery/gold colour with blue lettering. the later ones had red lettering, it didn't say TVIS on the intake and the plastic cover in between the cam covers was different if i remember rightly

as far as i knew, all uk AE86's (like all AE82's) originally came with the early blue-top engine, but i could be wrong

That must be off an european website, as no 4AGE in the UK was fitted with an Air Flow Meter, they were all Map sensors!

And no AE86 ever ran AFM's being a UK spec or Import!
